Steve as you pointed out earlier when you install Hoster this returns. It may be something that Windows does when Hoster or any program does when it install them. I don't know but I have been recommending your remedy for this and Microstudio as both have to access the drives. Thanks for finding it.
By the way I am not a moderator here, nor am I am employee of MTU. I am a customer just like the rest with a few years computer experience. And according to the number of posts I have put in here...a big mouth.

Dale,

I appreciate your and Jim's help and support, and Hoster should also because without you I would not be ready to buy this product and the problem for the most part was not on their end. This is a complicated program and everything needs to be right for it to perform.

Forums are only as good as the quality knowledgeable people that respond to people's cries for help!!! Big mouths????? I don't think so! There is nothing more flustrating than a computer gliche that you can't fix on your own or more satisfying than someone you don't know taking the time to take up your problems as their own.

I am just in the door on this program and will be back for advice, keep up the good work, I'll talk with you again!

tried the "filter deleting" tip

The laptop is a Dell (don't have it here right now), so model number not available....more importantly, it was PURCHASED from MTU!

I tried the upper/lowerfilters thing before posting to the forum. The tech had me looking at the filters earlier yesterday and thought the problem was in there..but wasn't able to ask the programmer (gone home).

I've tried removing the filters altogether, as described in the fix, as well as having the filters there but having no data in therm...neither has worked. Again, this is only a problem in Hoster (of the drive not showing up)...all other programs access drive without problem.

I even tried a system restore today back to a date when Hoster was working fine...no dice.

When did you purchase it? What CD drive brand and model is it? The filters are not the only thing that can keep the drive from working especially if it works in all the other programs.

Whits,

Are you sure in the regedit part of the fix that you located the right drawer? The number included in the fix is long and easily can take you to the wrong one. Also, you must reboot afterwards for the computer to recognize the drives once more. Try it again and be very careful with the string of numbers.

Details

Ok, the laptop, purchased from MTU back when version 3 of Hoster was the latest (not sure of date) is a Durabook, model R15D. I'm using, now, Hoster version 3.321a. The cd/dvd drive (came installed, only one in it) is an Optiarc DVD/RW AD-5540A. Shows up under device manager and is functioning correctly with all programs except for Hoster. The driver is signed by Microsoft Windows Publisher and is version 5.1.2535.0.

I'm sure of the correct registry key (the same one Hoster tech was having me look at.

Screenshot shows directory. After I did a system restore to an earlier date, the upperfilters returned with some data, but no lowerfilters. Yes, I've removed the filters and restarted the computer on previous attempts.

Thanks for the help!
