What icons disappeared? This is just too wierd. Did the install file get deleted or did it stay?

It ALL got deleted, and I didn't notice because I have not tried to use it but one time. I am a singer. I had to do a show and wanted all my songs in order on one cd for a change. Then I forgot about until the electric went off. And I bought more songs and wanted to do that again.
Nowhere to be found as if it was never there.

It was the right half of the desktop icons on the desktop. The intall file did not get deleted as for me it was not on the desktop. When I bought the upgrade, I did not download it again. I used the same installation program to install the new version only this time I did not get the error message that I did not qualify for the upgrade. After it transmitted to MTU, it finished the installation.

When you installed did you have your second/extended monitor on or at least plugged in? I am getting a feeling that the display resolution is getting changed temporarily or the secondary monitor is getting set to extended mode and the icons moved out there.

I did not have a second monitor hooked up. This is my backup machine and I usually just let it run in a resized screen mode. I do however have the machine set in dual monitor (dual view mode) but unless a TV is hooked up and has power the machine comes up in the normal mode using the PC monitor.

This sort of thing happened to me once, I think. I was installing one of the newer versions of hoster (can't even remember which one), and few days later I did notice that the shortcut icons in the desktop folder, where I keep all MTU shortcuts and a"yogen"(bite my tongue) full program icon, were all deleted. At the time I thought nothing of it, I thought it was something I did and didn't pay much attention to it until I noticed I had no "yogen" at all, when I went to use it several days afterwards. Can't remember what happened during that install or even if it went in successfully the first time or not.

So far, removing the icons appears to be based on what you last did that is saved in the /Temp folder. This makes the problem intertwined with other things that have happened. It'll be complex to diagnose, but we're getting a clearer picture.

MTUSUPPORT just tried and it removed some of his most recently installed icons. He is talking to our Senior Programmer right now.

I'll keep you folks informed as this evolves.

Alright, here's what we have found, and I'll say right up front that we are still searching for a work-around if possible.

1. MTU Products are NOT the only ones removing desktop icons. We have tested several other products we recently downloaded, one being a competitor's product, and they TOO remove icons.

2. The icons that are removed have some installation component in the Windows /TEMP folder. Whatever is causing the problem appears to be using this folder's contents. That is why your most recent programs, icons, etc. are disappearing.

3. This has not appeared until recently. Thus, we believe it is "probably" caused by some Windows automatic upgrade, that will mysteriously be fixed in a future upgrade and we'll never hear about it.

4. So far... in our limited research, it seems that programs using various installing tools under Windows are being removed. Thus, our use of InstallShield does not seem to be causing this problem either.

So what do you do?.
The easiest answer is to be sure to set a Restore Point, or default Windows to always create a new Restore Point before you install or remove any program.
