Question Desktop Icons were removed?

I saved the 3.318 exe file to my desktop. This is when the error ocurred & then somehow the old exe file removed itself along with half of my desktop icons... would this have something to do with the bad file..?? I was preparing new books and was working on it through a word document on my desktop - this has now vanished & I have tried search & temp files but so far have not located it...?? Luckily there was an Auto Recovery done not long before this so I haven't lost toooo much...

Was that a shortcut on the desktop to the actual file. If so it may have lost the location. Hoster does not remove files especially on the desktop.

Windows will "clean up" your Desktop from time to time "for you", removing old, unused Icons. I've had it do mine several times. It's very disconcerting when it happens. Makes you think... what the heck happened? Is my computer dying?

The problem with the first 3.318 was strictly involved with our security in the code, and the web script it talks to. 3.318 was an after-thought. All the fixes were already done in Hoster 4.000 Beta X. Thus, we created a "downgraded version from 4.000. That's where the conflict came in.

If anyone knows how to disable Windows doing this auto-cleanup, please post it here! I hate their "housekeeping" my computer. Yes, I know there is a do you want to do it approval, but in all cases I have experienced, I wasn't paying attention and didn't expect their dialog and had already queued up an "Enter" key press that this dialog accepted... or something else, including pilot error on my part.

Thanks for this. I have checked my Desktop 'Clean Up' & it is definately unchecked. I am pretty sure though - on my other computer when it did clean up the old icons that it created a folder on the Desktop with them in.

I am quite sure this wasn't the problem though. This is what happened when I was trying to get 3.318 to work:

Day 1. Downloaded new 3.318 exe file to Desktop. Tried to run & it came up with the serial error. Tried several times & then gave up for the day.

Day 2. Went back to computer to try again. Exe file was gone. Thought it was pretty strange so then re downloaded it again to my desktop from Hoster. Tried to run 2-3 times I think but still the serial number error. Obviously this was still the corrupt file.

Within a few minutes of my 3rd attempt it vanished along with some of the other icons on my desktop. I tried the search button & sure enough there it was... both versions of 3.318 exe that I had downloaded from Hoster. Since it was there I didn't worry about it so left it for the time being.

Day 3. Went back in to search again so I attempt once more. I couldn't find the exe files anywhere... I then realised that two of the icons that had vanished were my Song Books that I was editing through word. These weren't shortcuts - they were the actual documents... I have been unable to locate these documents as well

I hope this makes sense. I can only assume it was because of the Hoster exe file but who knows... it definately wasn't the clean up wizard as these files were at best 1Day old.

desk icons disappeared with 3318 update

Kjunkie, I had the same loss of half my desktop icons and it was NOT a windows clean up deal. I had to use xp restore to get things back to normal and have not been brave enough to load the 3318 update since then.

We hear you folks.

It is very hard to believe that the InstallShield program we use to install Hoster can do this. However, anything is possible with software.

Given that two of you, and possibly myself also, have experience this, we will study the code to see if there is anything that we need to fix.

There are LOTs of InstallShield setup checkboxes that can do powerful things. We'll start looking this morning.

I split this out as a separate Thread as there may be others who would comment on it if it is visible.

If you have xp or vista, with it set up to set restore points, yes you can go back to a time before the problem.

I'm setting at a vista laptop but I believe the path is about the same as xp.

If you go to start/programs/accessories/system tools/system restore, or restore I think is all it says in xp. Click on that and it should bring up a calendar with highlighted dates. If it does have dates highlighted then the restore points are turned on and you can go back to any of them.

I'm saying if it is turned on because this vista box I'm using right now didn't have it turned on originally from the factory. Thanks HP, apparently the only thing they wanted users to do was back all the way up to how it came from the factory.

My installation failed because I got the message that said I did not qualify for the upgrade. I subsequently bought the upgrade and installed it. Half of my desktop icons disapeared and I thought my operating system was going crazy. I tried to do a restore and my computer said it could not be restored. The Hoster installation program must have set a restore point before installing as there was a restore point there that I did not make. I did make a restore point but I labeled mine "Before installing 3.318" and yours said "Removed Hoster". There are problems with Hoster 3.318 as well.

1. The problem with MUX not automatically selecting left or right is back.
2. I believe Hoster ate one of my .hst files. I used it and turned it off my machine. The next time I started Hoster there was nothing in the playlist window. I went to select it from the playlist files and there were no playlist files to select. I coppied the files back to the playlist directory from a backup and tried to load the .hst file that had been eaten and it would not load. It still will not load.
3. I also got an error trying to add a song to the playlist from the search menu.

I hate to say it but it looks that a can of worms has been unleashed. I am glad you are looking into this. It's a good thing that I always load the new versions on my second computer and not my show computer as I would have not been very happy.

Just to see if there is a trend. Did you save and run the installation file from the desktop, too? Vista or XP?

Your problem sounds like the typical Vista problem. Find the Hoster folder under the Program Files on your C: drive using Windows Explorer, click on it then find the Compatbility Files Button and click on it. That should fix it and allow you to work with and print your songbook.

What do you mean by a "redo"? Do you mean the computer restarted?
Did you look for your program in the Start/Programs list? It should be listed under Micro Technology Unlimited/ Hoster.
