Maybe that's why they call it "system" restore.

I'd still try it if all else fails, and I continue to do so, but with crossed fingers, as it fails more times than it works.
Except for one time when I had a bad block on the disk right where the restore settings were located, it has always worked for me. Even after removing and installing an upgrade that wouldn't work, I could restore to before the removal and the old version would be there fully functional.

Not a gaurentee by any means, but something worth trying.
