Error Message "mix file check error"

I recently did a fresh install for Win ME. I reinstalled Krystal with ME 2.7b and 5.3c. Krystal passes all of the interupt tests. In M.E. 2.7b any time i do an operation i.e., move a segment, split a segment, insert a track marker, it gives me the error "Missing or invalid file in file list. Error is in file list at offset $a6." I can click ok and keep working but as soon as I do another operation it gives me the error. In M.E. 5.3c the program just stops responding and I have to restart the computer. I have reseated krystal and reinstalled the M.E. software but I skeep getting the error. Any suggestions?
