I never really thought about it before. But i use one of those laptop cooling boards with dual fans to keep my laptop cool. Actually i guess those fans suck the nasty air in and blow it right into the inner workings of my laptop. Coating my motherboard, connections, and the laser eye of my CD rom drive with cigarette smoke and nasty french fry gease. As well as my mtu external drive, it to has it's own cooling fan sucking in the nasties to ... yuck. I sure wish michigan would go smokeless. We are behind the rest of the country in that regards. We have the highest unemployment rate in the nation. So we need the tabacco tax. We just raised the tax again, almost 3 bucks of every pack is for tax. A bag of roll yur own tabaccie, is up above $50.00 a pound. A pound of pipe tabacci is close to $30.00 a pound. I use to smoke 3 packs of cigarettes a day before i gave it up cold turkey back around 1990..

I kinda took the message as maybe people would quit smoking to avoid harming their OWN computer, such as voiding the warrenty on their personal computers at home. At least, that is how i read the post. I believe this is the point intended of the post.

I don't think Apple is saying that the smoke causes the computer to fail, but that it is hazardous to their technicians. As one person pointed out OSHa put it on the same list with isopropal alchohol and a comple ofther cleaning fluids. This is why Aplle will not make their technicians work on those computers.

Salt air is more of a problem

Salt air is more of a problem with my equipment. i do shows mostly on or near enough to the beach in Fort Lauderdale and I notice more connector problems with my mixing boards than my cpu. Anyone know a good way to clean these inputs?

You might try a thin coat of white lithium grease ( electronics kind) to keep the salt from attacking the metal in the connectors.

you probably can use CRC, it comes on a spray can, this will prevent moisture going into any electrical stuff, just like what Dale was saying

You guys aren't going to believe this, but our legislature just passed a workplace smoking ban???huh??? gotta be this forum to thank for this..how else could you explain it??? read this, and watch the video. Now it doesn't cover casinos so you detroit cats don't git yur hopes up. I think this is wonderful. Just passed goes into effect May 2010.......

Public smoking was banned in Alberta 2 years ago, which is when I started singing karaoke. I am severely alergic to tobacco smoke and avoided bars my entire life. Now I go to bars at least twice a week. The short term effect of the ban was a loud outcry by businesses claiming it would hurt their business. The long term effect is that it has had no effect on business. Smokers go outside to smoke, even in horrible weather, and they do not complain. It's always a hi and a smile as I pass them on the way inside. People like me who avoided bars, now do not, which offsets any reduction of business by smokers not going as often or staying as long (if this happens; I don't know). The only downside to business during the switchover was caused by the gvt itself making short-term concessions to the most vocal businesses. As to casinos, there is a native run casino near my house. I went there once to check it out, but have never returned because of the smoke. I frequent others in town where smoking is banned. They are all doing good business.

MusicMan, Michigan is trying to pass a law to stop smoking in all public places. The only exception would be casinos. I also think that since VFW's, American Legion's, Am Vets, etc. are not 'public' they may also be an exception.

Oh I see, but it is also known that ppl will only quit "anything" for their own reasons, not someone else's, and I think Apple knows that as well. Let's face it, if they won't quit for their own health, you really think they're gonna quit for their computer's health.?

Ouch.

I see your point though, and may very much be the case, who knows?

My intentions of this post had absolutly nothing to do with the smoking VS: non smoking controversy. Ya'all can smoke till your hearts content, as i stated i use to burn up over 3 packs aday. My intentions were simply to bring to your attention the new rules Apple is going to adhere to. I do think others will also follow along with them. I think we will see a new trend here. I sorta agree with what someone said about doing that study, and the failure rate. It really doesn't matter what may or may not be worse for our computers. Dust for example doesn't cause a toxic situation for repair tech's, neither does salt water air. And no one forced me to give up the winstons, i did it cold turkey on my own, same with the miller lite, and jack chasers. That made alot of sense also about replacing the warm air in my laptop with cooler air outside of it...i never really thought about that.

Yeah, sorry about that. I just had to write a check to the state for every pack of cigs I had in inventory because they made the tax hike retroactive.. I may have been a little bit overheated at the time about this particular subject.

But back to the subject at hand. I still think Apple is taking advantage of the hysteria over second-hand smoke. I have literally handled thousands of computers over the years. I have yet to see anything that even hinted at smoke being a problem, even on fickle laptops. I HAVE however amassed a LOT of anecdotal data about pet hair. This one will take out the cooling pipe in a laptop in no time. It still isn't directly responsible for a failure. It just clogs up the system and causes overheating. As far as hazards inside the computer, I would be much more concerned about the lead and mercury and lord knows what else that is used in Malaysia, Taiwan, or China where the electronics are manufactured.

Shame on you Apple.
