i have done this to all of my laptops and i didnt have any problems, as a matter of fact i did this the other day on my mini laptop when i connected an ext. monitor, and i went thru a few resolutions before i could get the right one..maybe i just got lucky...there should be a warning on these steps, if there was i didnt see it..
It's funny that billyo brought this up. Normally, you don't even have the choice if your screen is properly recognized by Windows. Even if you do have the option, it always asks for a confirmation or it will reset to the original size. HOWEVER, just last night, I lost the power supply on my desktop PC and had to hook up my older monitor. It will only go to 1024x768, but my settings were set higher. I did, in fact, have to boot to safe mode to change the resolution back. Other than that, I have never had one iota of problems setting different resolutions on many, many different computers.
