Hoster 4.09a crashes, destroys XP

I wrote this once, but I don't think it was posted. Now I have to repost all the @#$#% stuff I already typed!

I have an AMD 2.51 GHZ X2 dual 4800+, 1 GB of DDR2/800, 60GB on C: (system and programs) and 70GB on D: (hoster song storage), ASUS nVidea dual display graphics.

Hoster about half the time crashes XP when I start hoster up. It shows the main window, then after a few seconds reboots my system. It went down so hard last time that my boot was corrupted (boot.ini) and I've had to re-install. My version of XP is old (pre-sp1), so I have to re-install all the SPs and drivers which takes lots of time. If this were to have happened during a show, then I'd have been SOL.

I have noticed something I think is always true (but am not absolutely sure is constant). If the singer display main section is blank, then hoster doesn't crash the system. If it comes up with some sort of welcome message, then the system reboots.

First thing is you need to upgrade to 4.09d which fixed some items that were inadvertently broken during the 4.09 upgrade. None of these including 4.09a involved any crashing problems.

Have you had any problems with it since re-installing XP?

Also did you do all of the rest of the Custom updates along with the SPs?

Did you do all the steps required in this link (also referred to in the manual)?

Are you referring to the MTU short video at start-up as a Welcome message? This item is required to initialize the video part of the player. The file is in the Program Files section for Hoster and is called mtus.wmv. You might try playing it directly in Media Player and see if it can play it without crashing. If it either can't play it or WMP crashes then it may be a corrupted codec for the WMP.

You may also have XP set to reboot on error which will cause it to reboot anytime somethhing causes an error instead of just showing you the error. This can be turned off in the Control Panel/System/Advanced/Start-up and Recovery Settings.

You could have run the Repair from the XP install disk and fixed the Boot.ini file along with others. But reloading didn't hurt either.

I wonder if this has anything to do with a slight problem I mentioned a while back on opening. My computer would open up the main screen and I would see the hoster.wmv open up in the preview window, then I would get a "Hoster must close" error a few seconds later (just before my logo would normally show up).. The error info said something about "wmp" in it. However, the crash was very infrequent, but I still get it ince in a while. I use wmp 11 on XP sp3.

Sorry, I listed the wrong version. I am using 4.09d.

I've installed all the windows updates. I was able to reuse my old installation after installing in "C:\Windows2" by copying the boot.ini file there to the root directory, therefor I am still using the old version. However, sometimes the boot.ini file is disappearing and I have to use the second boot to re-copy the boot.ini back to c:\. I'm sure this paragraph is of no use, but I included it as "more information."

I've gone through all of the updates and changes mentioned in your posting. I'm doing them again. I now notice that wmp is giving me an error, which could be causing all of this. I'll investigate and update this post later.

How do I re-install wmp?

Since none of the problems you have mentioned with Hoster would have anything to do with the Boot.INI file it is very unlikely that Hoster is causing this.
Run Chkdisk on your C: drive and see if there is a problem with the drive.

The boot.ini problem had to do with Ask toolbar in IE8, not an MTU issue. Sorry about that, it just started at about the same time I was having the other issues.

I've gone back and done a complete reinstall on a brand new hard drive and still had the hoster crashing XP problem. I updated to 4.11 and hoster now seems to come up clean. However, now when I open a video, hoster crashes (but not XP). It starts back up real quick and the video I was openning is in the playlist and it plays without incident.

This problem is anoying, but I can live with it.

Your going to have to explain this a little simpler. I am confused about exactly what you are doing and what is happening.
Check the version and make sure you have 4.11. with the dots before and after the 11. If not redownload and install again.

Hi Dale. I just installed 4.11 (22/10/09) and there is no "."after 11. Have MTU removed the dot?

Stef, look in Help/About Hoster and the extra dot will be there. It does not show on the installer opening page.

No dot there. Is there a special download section for the dot version?

No there isn't. Redownload it and install again using the update. You must have downloaded before the second release was put up.
