If your recorder is supported I would first upgrade my ASPI drivers, that seems to take care of most of the problems, here is the link for that:

I did go to MTU's supported recorders and did not find your HP9700I, but if it allowed you to read to hard drive I'll assume that it is supported until Admin tells us different, here is a link to the supported recorders list: http://www.mtu.com/support/cdr-ide-drives.htm You can check the list...
