Duplicate song list with -4.hst

Okay, Tell me why I am getting a duplicate song list with a -4.hst extension?
I saw it posted sometime back but can't find it now. List are exactly the same and work fine.

Usually means that it couldn't open the original #1 list for some reason. As long as it is a duplicate you should be able to delete it.

If you don't want to lose it, rename it to something else, then Hoster will use that until you tell it to start a "New" list.

This didn't happen until I first upgraded to 4.01 and I thought I had seen a post about this problem..... Also it seems to do it on any song list I have but I'll double check that....After reading these forums, I am not utilizing this software and what all it will do...blows me away but I love it... Thanks and I'll give it a try..

When 4.0x first came out, all zip files had to be converted to mp3g files and 2 more columns were added to the Playlist. Hence, when you opened an old (previously saved Playlist), Hoster automatically converted the Playlist to show the new columns and new features. Hence.... the converted playlists show -4 beside them rather than replacing the old ones. Any playlists that do not show this means you haven't opened them yet. I haven't tried deleting the old .hst files, just in case they are used by 3.4. They don't take up any room. I hope this at least explains where they came from.

Good guess, but not quite right Skybird. Yes more columns was added to the playlist but it didn't have anything to do with the zip file conversions. They added the type of file and bookid at the request of the beta testers.
Both playlists will work in either version because 3.4 jsut ignores the last two columns.
As I said you can rename them without any problem (except if you rename them exactly the same as an existing file). If you want to save the new and use it, then delete the original and do a Save As from in Hoster to name the 1-4 version back to just 1.

If you create a playlist in 3.4 and then open it in 4.0 Hoster will add a -4 to it.
Creating one in 4.0 should not do this.

This is how it works on my system anyhow.

Hey thanks everyone, you must be right..I messed with for hours last night, deleting song list, re-opening and such. Everytime time I opened a song list it created a -4.hst song list. I just ended up deleting the list that didn't the -4 extension and saving the ones in 4.06 with a -4.hst and left it alone. I"ll see what it does when I create a song list in 4.06.... I do have a New MTU folder on my C: drive in the root directory ( apparently it was created when I upgraded to 4.06 ) and a Micro Technology Folder (that is under program files) and all of my songs and list were in the Micro Tech file and it was looking for the list from the new MTU file and I don't have a clue how to fix that....Otherwise it was going looking for the original list and took too much time....I told you I was a Rookie. ... Thanks again.

You need to move all the hst files to the new C:\MTU\Hoster folder as that is where Hoster will look for them. Where are you KMA files located? If they are also under the Micro Tech folder then you need to move them to the new C:\MTU\Songs folder. If they are on another drive then they are fine where they are.
Once you have moved those files out from under the Micro Tech folder then you can delete all sub folders under MicroTech...\Hoster folder. Do not delete the individual files in the Hoster folder itself.
If you need more explanation post back here and I'll try to be more specific.
As to the -4.hst files you can do a Save As under Files in Hoster and name it without the -4. Then the next time you open Hoster it should come up without it.

It's good to know the Playlist/-4.hst files can be renamed & that both will work in either version. Didn't think it was important enough to ask right now; that's why I answered the way I did. (zip conversion was included the same time the extra columns were added, so actually I was just referring to the "timing" when one would notice new "-4 playlists".)

Dale, I moved the Song folder with all my kma files to c/Mtu/hoster where there was NO song folder already (I created a song folder) but there was a kma folder. Everything seems to work (got rid of the -4ext too) but I can't import any new songs from CB E-7 that I just got. It first came up with error 0! and closed Hoster. Now it just come up with send/don't send error report to MSoft and closes Hoster. It does this after trying to import the first song when it goes to write the kma file. Help please...Also my manual won't load, just found out.....Thanks

Glen did you change the folder location (Save to) in the import window. Since you moved that folder from the current location then the import screen is trying to send the file to a non-existent location and that will definately cause a problem.
You could have moved the files to the KMA Files folder as that was what it was intended for. My objective was for you to move them out of the Program Files area. No problem though as it will work fine the way you have it.

Dale, I seem to have everything working with the exception of when I start 4.06 it takes forever to load and the lyrics lag. Not so with 3.4 that is still there. My shortcut on the desktop is still going to "C:\Program Files\Micro Technology Unlimited\Hoster\Hoster.exe" but 4.06 is in C:\MTU...I think that's what causing the delay but I don't know how to fix it. I have 3 folders under C:\MTU - Hoster, KMA Files and Songs. There is nothing under KMA, all my kma files are in the song folder which I moved from "C:\Program Files\Micro Technology Unlimited\Hoster\Hoster.exe"...am I making any sense? Can you help me? I can give you an 800# to call me if necessary.

No the Hoster program file (Hoster.exe) is in the Program Files area. Only the working files are in C:\MTU\Hoster. So this is not your problem.
How big is your c: drive and how much free space do you have on your C: drive?
Have you tried defragging it?
That would be the first step. As for the sync problem, have you done all the microsoft "Custom" updates?
Also update your drivers for the video card.

First Thanks for responding Dale. I have a Dell Inspiron, Core Duo Processor, running XP, 120gb HD, 62.5% used- 47.8 free, running O&O Auto Defrag showing 0% fragmented. I am manually defraging at this moment. SP3 has been installed. Not sure about what Custom Updates that are needed. I only have about 7000 kma files. I just do this for my wife and a couple of ladies who perform for local charities and I do a few small shows for close friends so far. The thing is, whatever changed in 4.06 I must not have something correct. I like 4.06 but as a lot of people have said, 3.40 works without a hitch and I guess I still don't have 4.06 set up correctly yet. I'll see what happens after it finishes defrag and I have no idea about the "Custom Updates" so I'll need help with that. Thanks again......

Go to the windows update site. On the left hand panel you will see a "Custom" selection. The default only gives you the security updates. You will probably have to go through the process multiple times. Just keep getting custom updates until there are no more to get. In particular, you will need to make sure you have the .net framework. 3.0 is the latest for XP. But you need 1.0, 2.0, and all updates in between. The rest will be for various other components.

Okay Guys this is where I'm at....I have de-fraged (didn't seem to help much) , gone to windows updates and installed all the custom updates available. I do not have .net framework 3.0 as far as I can tell and don't know where to go get it. It takes on the average 55 seconds for Hoster to load - works fine until I go to settings and extend to monitor 2. Then I get the lyrics lagging. I don't even have to double click to put the lyrics on the monitor and the lyrics lag. Got to get out for a while, I'll check back later. Again thanks for everyones help.
