That is strange but not that strange, pc love em or hate em. First thing I would do is go on line and see if any upgrades for her pc is available. Next upgrade the windows media player. I had my pc a rackmount from MTU start shutting down when using the media player, after 4 years of use. Went on line and upgraded the player and checked for XP upgrades all is well again.

Sorry Billyo, I haven't had time to check back here in a couple of days. Without setting in front of the computer, I can only guess at what it might be. What I know for sure is that Windows is not releasing the memory at the time SOME program should close. I say some because it does not necessarily involve Hoster. Even though you might get an error message that indicates Hoster, there are instances that the message is incorrect.

It can be caused by a corrupt swap file involving windows management of the swap file. This can be caused by a failing hard disk, or failing memory, or just Windows in general. Sometimes running the updates for Windows does nothing more than shuffle addresses around and may fix the problem as a side effect. Sometimes you really DO need the updates to Windows or your hardware. This is where I would start.

After that, I would change the size and or location of windows swap file. Then I would start on hardware. Run a disk checker or other diagnostic tools. If the laptop has 2 sticks of memory in it, I would remove one then try it then switch out chips and try it again. Then switch positions or try some other memory if available.

Lastly, If it were me,I would probably do nothing. I have a laptop with the same symptoms. It doesn't bother me a bit. I keep a backup of the data, and a backup unit is available. I assume if the problem doesn't get better, it will get worse. If it gets worse, it will be easier to find the problem and I won't waste the time trying to track down what, at the end of the day, is no big deal.

The error message should say what is not responding. It could be the mouse program or some other background program that doesn't close when it is supposed to. If she closes Hoster it should be gone from the processes list in task manager before she tries to shutdown.

What Dale and I are trying to say is, even though you THINK you only have one program running, you in fact have many things loaded into memory and in Windows swap file. If you would just try some of the suggestions and get back to us about the results, we may be able to help narrow it down. When you hit alt ctrl del you will see a whole list of running processes. Check the applications tab first. After shutting down Hoster look at the list to see if it is still running. Then start closing programs from the processes list leaving explorer and task manager for the last. You need to give it a minute between processes to see when the error pops up. Then report back with the results. I feel 99.9% sure this is a Windows error and not a Hoster issue. If it were Hoster, somebody should have reported this same error by now.
