how do I stop a slime ball?

I had a helper who would run 2nd shows or things for me if i could not. Wee this person took my external hard drive and coppied all my music. Bought Hoster and is now working on MY hard earned paid for music. Is there a way to lock a folder from copy or transfer...or a way to stop this ... the government and laywers told me there is nothing I can do ..the labes that supply music must do it .. casue its a cpyright law..

SO IF i CANT Sue him or put him in jail..how can I stop from someone doing this to me again.

Rich

Small claims court can offer you some relief. I would say that he has taken business from you and has cost you thousands of dollars in present and future gigs by his theft of your hard drive contents. If you can request through the court a copy of his songbook with evidence of purchase (not sure how it is done in your state in mine you file a discovery motion). You will provide a copy of your songbook with evidence of your purchase to compare. Ask for the maximum amount allowed for small claims where you live. A civil case has a lower threshold of burden of proof than a criminal case. He may just not even care enough to show up and you'll get a default judgment. Then file for a garnishment to all the bars he is working for and he will either pay up, or get fired from the gigs. Either way, you win.

Just hinting that the IRS will be contacted about the bar paying people under the table will usually send them (bar management) running for cover. Even business owners who are 100% legal get butterflies at the thought of an audit - at the very least you could make things difficult for him. You just want to make sure it can't backfire on you.

I think there are things you can do that would protect against many users that don't know windows very well but it probably wouldn't protect 100%. I don't know much about that stuff. Perhaps somebody more knowledgable than me can chime in.

the garnishment thing is also governed by different laws from state to state. i'm pretty sure that in nc there are almost no circumstances where you can have someone's wages garnished. the court can order it for child support, and the irs can do it, but i don't think that form of relief is available to other injured parties. i know that creditors can't garnish in NC.

Ya, there's probably not a lot you can do now, as far as court proceedings go, he'll have plenty of time to redo his books, purchase a few discs, and do whatever he needs to do to prove he's legit. If you had proof of him stealing your HD contents, that might help.

There is nothing you can do in Windows to prevent your hosts from copying the contents unfortunately. In order for them to do your show tey have to have access to them and that opens it up to copying. The only thing I could see you could do is to physically control the computer, by having them pick it up from you before a show and bring it back right after the show. That would give them no time to copy the files, but that is pretty extreme. Try having them sign a legal contract stating they will not alter your music files in any way (a lawyer could word it better) then you might have something for the courts.
Admin talked at one time about creating an encryption program that would encrypt and prevent your KMAs from playing on any other player including Hoster, but they have not come out with anything yet.

Go to where he is selling his services and just inform the bar owners of his illegal activities. Remind them it is their entertainment license, do what they like but he is not legit as he has stolen from you. Usually a few words and no one will want the thief around them. Dishonesty is one thing most bar owners have to deal with and have a frequent turnover in help on account of that, so letting them know their new KJ is dishonest may go a long way.

You stated that he was on disablilty, have someone take a photo of him working (shoukld be easy enough) and take that photo to the state. When they see he is WORKING, he will be in big trouble and have to pay back then state. The state does not take this issue lightly. It may not get you back your losses, but it will get him in a tight spot.

Not only that, he probably has government housing of some kind. The rent is based on your income. Inform them that he is working for cash. A picture is worth a thousand words. Also, you could ask one of the bars you work for to ask him for a reference letter from the places he DJs because they are considering him for a weekly gig. Then you will have written documentation from his employers that he works there. Forward that to the state disability office. Not only will they deny his disability, they will have a time frame to charge him for previous overpayments.

owners

most owners dont care. they see me as a disgruntled competitor. LOTS of fl by night 50-100$ and free booze Djs out spending money on equiptment and limewire music. When he started his own company I spoke directly to the bar owners about keeping me and what he did.. but he is a PARTIER so the usomters like him casue he will drin with em all night... and hes cheap casue he can be... I am legal straight arrow and I cant get ahead of the cheaters!

All bars have a very high insurance premium and as such should not have a person on disability bringing in equiptment and setting it up. Could cause a big problem if he got hurt. Find out if the bar is aware he draws disability. If so, the local liquer control comission may like to hear of it. So would the bars liability insurance provider. One other thing report the sucker to the IRS obvious he does not file a W9
