<<< Any new programs, >>> Audacity; but I have removed it and re-booted.
<<< plugins, addins, etc. installed? >>> Not to my knowlege
<<< What updates have been done? >>> All
<<< Any hardware changes? >>> No
<<< As a last resort you could try to restore back to a time when it was working. This may or may not work but could be worth a shot. >>> How do you do this?

I can't help you there as I don't have Vista. Someone else will have to walk you through it.

Problem solved. The audio hardware acceleration had somehow gotten set to: MAX. I moved the slider to the left two notches, and ... voila !!! The thing that puzzles me is what happened to cause this. Thanks to everyone for all the help.

I have noticed that a recent Microsoft patch (for XP) has reverted some settings back to default. i.e. My CD auto-run was turn back on. After seeing this post I'll check if the acceleration is cranked up as well.

Beats the heck out of us too!

Thanks for posting your "find". Usually, MTU is left as the bad guy when any problem on the computer happens.
