No such thing as overkill when it comes to media/entertainment systems IMO. In my eyes the faster the processor, more memory, high end video card & sound card is a must. Lessens the chances of glitching.
As far as choosing Vista, I wouldn't have a clue, I got what came with my new tower & know it works with Hoster.
