I have one set up that can use up to 4 separate monitors as part of an extended screen. This set-up uses a built-in ATI Expres 200 card that will accept an additional ATI Radeon card (I forget the model and don't have the machine here to look.
ATI does make "Game" video cards that can handle up to 4 monitors the same way as above with only one video card. This would probably be the way you need to go as my other system motherboard (ASUS) is no longer available. Do a Google search for multiple monitor video cards.

I did a searched on this and i was told by one of the tech from nts.com that there will be a usb powered adaptor that could display up to 4 monitors sometime next year....
