Its like I need to boost the signal of the TV to let the PC know its there

When you have it all on (including the check for Extended) and set up try right clicking on the #2 monitor and "Activate" it. Have had this happen to me a couple of times.
As long as it has "Extended desktop capability then you shouldn't need the RF mod.
