can't import cdg files

I'm using windows 98
aspi drivers set to use default driver
no adaptec direct cd installed
directx 8 or better installed
cdrw autoinsert off
cd rom autoinsert off
cdrw set to udma
cd rom set to udma

trying to import tracks or duplicate disks I get the starting audio extraction message, the drive reading light comes on for a while then it stops. After a while I got error "this program has performed am illegal operation & will be shut down
Can't reopen anything without a hard reboot
I updated aspi drivers to 4.6 and I have the same problem except now I get "error unable to read audio sectors 0 to 25 on device 1:0:0 aspi timed out
using 2 different chartbuster brand cd+g discs
