Lockups when playing back

I have windows xp professional with an athlon xp 2000+ 1.67 ghz processor and 256 mb of ram. Everytime I play a disc the computer it locks the computer and I have to shut down. Do you know of a solution to this problem?

I also have the same operating system on a HP Pavillion 7950.
The program will not recognize my plexwriter 40/12/40u usb drive.
I have the latest aspi drivers but it will not see the drive.
What can I do to fix this?
