1. The Error Message you were receiving is because of Bad CD-R Media.......there are several articles in the forums discussing that All CD-R Media Are Not Created Equal.
2. You may still be able to use the Circuit City discs by reducing the writing speed to 4x, 2x or even 1X.
3. As "Jim In Ohio" said.......you don't want to dump the Sony CRX140E as it is one of the very few CD-RW's in the world that can read and copy Sound Choice's Media Cloq protected discs.
