Based on your question, I went back over the entire problem to get answers. The result of trying to get the answers is I now have it working. I installed the same driver, "290.53" that I did a year ago, but rather than choose EXPRESS for the installation I picked CUSTOM and only selected the drive itself for install. This time I was able to install the driver and things are now where they should be.

Just curious.... Did you by chance also select "Clean Install" in the Custom screen?
