Hoster 5.05 Won't Open

Instlled Hoster Lite 5.05. Made all the required changes and it was working. Then after installing Microstoft Office, Hoster would not open up anymore. So we uninstalled and reinstalled. The installation went well, no problems, but hoster lite will still not open. We also removed Microsoft Office in case it was interfering but I don't see why it would interfere. However Hoster will still not open. Has anyone had this happen or does anyone know why this is happening? It is a Windows7 version, 64 bit computer. Thanks

Re: Hoster 5.05 Won't Open

Did your version of office have Access included ?
Did you open your songs.mdb or singers.mdb to examine them using your new office instalation ?

Just wonder of installing Office did anything to your songs.mdb.
Try this open your C:/MTU/Hoster folder, find your songs.mdb and rename it to songs2.mdb (Just as a backup). If your songs are on an external Hard Drive be sure to have it connected before restarting. Hoster should first go through the process of rebuilding the Database before opening the first time. If all goes well you can delete the renamed songs2.mdb.
If it still won't open try the same process again except this time rename your singers.mdb to singers2.mdb but don't delete this if hoster opens as you may need to open it in another program to recover your singers.
If not report back and let us know if it went through the rebuilding process and created a new songs.mdb.

Re: Hoster 5.05 Won't Open

I did have Access included the in the Microsoft Office installation. I went ahead and did what you said. It did rebuild the songs data base. So then I followed the rest of your instructions, but Hoster Lite still did not open when I was finished following the instructions.

Re: Hoster 5.05 Won't Open

I can't think what has gone wrong here. Can you try using system restore and set it back to the time prior to installing the 5.05 upgrade?

But before doing this, delete the new songs.mdb again, and if you followed the second part of my instruction regarding renaming the singers.mdb, if it rebuilt that as well delete it again, then rename the singers2.mdb back to singers.mbd.

Looking back at previous posts of yours, it appears you had version 4.11 working OK so if you restore back to when you had this version if that opens you should then have to Rebuild it's database after it opens.

If that version doesn't open you may have to re-install it.

If you manage to get that original version working again, then try installing your office program again.
If all goes well after re-installing office, then you can try upgrading to the latest version 5.06 if your license allows this version, or try re-installing 5.05 again but get a fresh download of the file in case something was wrong with your download.

Re: Hoster 5.05 Won't Open

I did go back and restore the computer to my restore point before I installed anything. I also deleted all the hoster files of my C: drive as the MTU folder was still there. Then I reinstalled, made all the required changes, and it worked.

I think that Microsoft Office 2007 just does not work with Windows7? I don't think I am going to try and install office again as I am pretty sure that is what conflicted with Hoster. This was actually my Friend's laptop, so I suggested she either buy Microsoft Office 2010 or ask MTU to sell her the Songbook.

Thanks for all your help. I really appreciate you very much!!

Re: Hoster 5.05 Won't Open

When Hoster is installed, we also install the Access "JetEngine" for Access 97, which is what Hoster requires. This is the under-the-hood code that Access uses.

When you installed Office which included Access, it REPLACED our JetEngine with a newer one Hoster won't work with.

I'm surprised that removing Office w/Access didn't allow Hoster to run again after re-installing.

I'll make a note in our Engineering Specs to review if we can add a message when the Access 97 JetEngine is not found. Due to the way Windows works, it may PREVENT installing the 97 JetEngine once a later dated version has been installed.

We can check that, but not immediate. We're way behind on the future of Karaoke as a result of Hoster 5.06.

Re: Hoster 5.05 Won't Open

That's interesting, what you said about Microsoft Access replacing the Access Jet Engine you use for Hoster. I have an older version of Hoster, I think 4.11. I already had Access 2007 installed when I installed my Hoster Lite on my Laptop.
I run WindowsXP. I have no problems with the Access Database that Hoster uses to store the song information. As a matter of fact, I make a copy of it (being careful not to change anything in the original file) and create a new database in Access that I can revise to print off my Song Books.

Does what you speak of only happen in the Windows7 version of Hoster - Access replacing the Access Jet Engine for Hoster? Or does this happen only if you install Access after you already installed Hoster?

Re: Hoster 5.05 Won't Open

I've got Microsoft Access 2002 on my windows 7 computer. I haven't noticed any problems having it installed.
if I want to compile any data from the Hoster databases I usually just make a copy of the file first and use the copy in access, that way there's no chance of spoiling the original by accidentally saving it.

This is the situation I was working from. Hoster was installed along with the Access JetEngine. THEN... Office/Access was installed, which "I believe" would overwrite the JetEngine Hoster had previously installed.

I added the as I don't know for sure. I discussed this with MTUSUPPORT this afternoon and he had not (except a long time ago) installed Access AFTER Hoster was installed. We will need to take a new system that doesn't have Access on it and try this sequence.

The sequence here is Access is installed, then you install Hoster's Access Jet engine... AFTER. This actually tends to confirm what I'm proposing as the cause. "I believe" this sequence works as that's what happens under 99.99X% of our Hoster users.

I am 99.999% sure that if you open either the songs.mdb or singers.mdb into any Access higher than Access 97, when either is OPENED, it is converted to the format of that Access version. We have some singers.mdb's from user with problems, and they definitely had been damaged in a way that even Access - in theory - would never do; we could copy a record including the SingerID field, then pasted it as a new record at the bottom. The SingerID was copied without being incremented to an unused number. Then 2 copies of that SingerID existed, and everything went downhill from there on. Access should NOT allow this, but it did. The users could not say what they did that damaged "something" deep in the .mdb file.

This is my general understanding of how WINDOWS installs LATER DATED program files REPLACING prior dated versions of the same named file. IF... Windows 7 changed this, I don't know.

I'll bring this up in our staff meeting tomorrow for discussion.

Re: Hoster 5.05 Won't Open

For what it is worth, I'm using MS Office 2010 (full version with Access) with current updates applied (Windows & MS Office).

When I installed, it did not have any negative affect on Hoster. I had MS Office 97 installed before that, still no issues.

Since FRadspinner is working on a "friends" laptop is he shure all updates have been applied to MS Office?

Re: Hoster 5.05 Won't Open

Yes, all updates were installed. To give you a rundown of what happened: I worked on this laptop from the beginning. I Installed Hoster (making all the required changes) and Hoster Lite was working correctly. Then I installed Microsoft Access 2007 which included Access. After that, Hoster would no longer open. I uninstalled Microsoft Office and Hoster would still not open. So, I uninstalled and reinstalled Hoster after this (at least 3 times) but Hoster still would not open. Finally, I restored the computer to the point before I ever installed Hoster or Microsoft Access, then reinstalled Hoster, (making all the required changes) and now it is working.
