Excellent VISTA instructions - Songbook editing

Now that I have all my karaoke cd's loaded into my computer, I realized that i do NOT have Word, Wordpad OR Excel on my new laptop. Is there ANY way I can still access my songlist to edit it without having these programs?

What operating system are you using?

Wordpad is a free program with Windows. START, PROGRAMS, ACCESSORIES.

At least it always was a freebie, but I am not familiar at all with Vista, so I cannot speak for it.

Word pad and can't access hoster songbook.rtf

Hello again!

First of all, I DID find Word Pad under Accessories on my VISTA program, but now it's telling me that the songbook.rtf path does NOT exist, even though while in hoster i can add to my song list and create my songbook...! Second of all, I also admit that i am not very computer literate when it comes to things such as this, which is why I ask the questions, so thanks for your patience.

I'm new to the world of having karaoke on a computer, i'm old school and had discs for the last 13 years; all this is almost foreign to me!

Thanks again for you patience and help!

Vista has a nasty habit of hiding files it thinks you should not have access to, unfortunately the songbook.rtf is one of them here's a link to another thread on this subject that should help.

Vista thinks that since, Hoster created the file that only Hoster should be able to open it. Add an external drive with your kma files and Hoster can't see them because Hoster didn't create them (under Vista). Somebody at Microsoft should be shot!

Vista messes with everything, even my kma's. KMA's I add via a memory stick will stay put but if I import to the same folder Vista will hide it in a "compatability folder" fortunately rebuild database function finds both without navigating to a separate location.

The headlines say Microsoft is losing a billion dollars over a problem with it's Xbox, I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't get dinged for Vista as well.

Vista, wordpad and other scary things!

Hello again!

last week, when I was unable to access my songbook through wordpad, you all were so kind in helping me discover that Vista is evil...! Now that i can access the songbook through wordpad and edit it, I have another issue which I'm SURE is a microsoft issue, but maybe you can help. After I try editing then SAVING, I get a message that the access to songbook.rtf file is DENIED..., therefore it won't let me save my editing, although I'm IN the file and working on it!

Any more threads on this subject?

once again thanks for any light you can shed on this issue!

Find the songbook file and change the security settings (right click on file and go to properties) to allow everyone full control. You can also find the wordpad.exe, right click on it and go to Run As and change to run as administrator. One of the two should let you modify the file.

I have yet to connect my laptop to a tv so I'm usure of the procedure.

I couldn't find "display" in my control panel but I did find an icon for the built in graphics card that appeared to do the trick, which on my machine is the same as right clicking the desktop and choosing "graphics properties" another thing that looked like it would do it is to right click on the desktop and then choose "personalize" (which is also in the control panel) and then on the upper left corner under "tasks" click on "connect to a projector or external display"

These two things show different screens so I don't know if they both will accomplish the same thing or if one is correct and the other is not.

Please report back.

Sam

dual display on vista system

Thanks for your input...I discovered that when you RIGHT CLICK on the desktop screen, there is a heading called PERSONALIZE on the Vista system that appears...That is where I was able to locate the display settings!

I pray that day is a long way off. I just hope that by the time I have to buy another computer, Vista is a better running operating system then it seems to be right now. It looks like they tried to make things easier and safer for the "computer dummies" and screwed up those of us who are the "computer geeks".

WE WILL OVERCOME!

I am far more dummy than geek. It seems to me that Vista sacrifices ease of use in favor of security.

I only use my laptop with Vista for beta testing and as a secondary backup for Hoster. If not for the betatesting I would have replaced Vista with XP long ago.

I see Sam"s and your point Bob. It's looking like Microsoft "dropped the ball" on the Vista OS release! I'll do like Dale and stay clear of Vista until I have no choice.

Thanks!

Jim

Gentlemen!

I would have avoided Vista too, but every laptop I shopped for had Vista on it and not XP, after 2 years of FINALLY getting comfortable with XP!
