Problems re-scanning songs in database

Stupid question (I have to ask)..........how can a file get corrupted? I thought digital files are supposed to last

I expect there could be numerous reasons, for instance if a hard drive got an section error then the file in that spot would be damaged.
When you do a hard drive check it normally repair the hard drive section but it may not repair the file that was on that part.
Files can still be damaged, I think you may be confusing it with copied files stay at the same quality as the original unless you compress it more than an original.
But with the old tape recordings, every copy lost something from the original for each copy you took.

Roy, thanks for the explanation. I do have a few songs that I imported from CDGs like 6 years ago where the graphics don't display clearly like they did originally (now spotted). But I haven't done any hard drive checks or anything else like that......just continued use. What does that mean?

The disc repair is a windows repair, I can't remember with Vista if you have to enter a command from the Run command might have to use run/chkdsk, on Windows 7 you right click on the drive, open properties and a dialog opens with options, the Tools tab then shows options to Check, Defrag or Back up.
As I stated doing this won't repair the spots in your files you will have to re-import them to do that.

Hi All,

I want to thank you guys, Roy, Lonman and Skybird 74 for your assistance. I resolved the problem by completely deleting the affected folders and reloading copies that I had stored in a seperate drive. I then re-scanned all folders and everything works well. Smacks of "overkill" but at the end of the day, problem fixed. Thanks again!

Now I'm confused again. I don't know what this has to do with files going bad, it seems for no reason. What difference does it make what kind of computer I have? All my songs are on an extenal hard drive. So, why do some songs simpy start showing spots a few years after import? Do they just go bad or get worn out somehow?

I was talking about how you access the command to instruct your computer to repair your external hard drive. On the old XP you had to enter a command prompt from the Start/Run, I can't remember if Vista is the same as Windows 7 that can be accessed from the drive properties.
I am not advising you to do this, I was just trying to explain one way that files can get damaged.

I never saw a reason to do anything to my external drive, since it is only used for storage (nothing ever gets changed, only added to). And the files I'm referring to are those I imported from my original disks. The only thing I did, was move the files from a 160G hd to a 500G hd. And only some of those files now show spots that were not there originally - and I have never felt the need to rebuild or rescan when I update Hoster. I did that once several years ago & found too many files left out because the Book ID got changed because I used to import with my desk top & transfer. So, I never did that again. (Sorry I got off topic.)
