I went to MalWart the yesterday & saw a clearance rack with 5 boxes of LiteOn DVD burners, my temporary machine didn't have a cdg compatible drive (even with Microstudio) so I took a look, they were marked at $20, picked one up & it works better than my Plextor as far as a couple discs that even it sometimes couldn't read well - even has the LightScribe capability. Going back tomorrow to pick up the rest for back ups - hopefully if they are still there.

as for changing out the hardware on the laptop in question, it's my son's work laptop, so i don't think they want him getting inside there and changing stuff around. i bought a gateway with 1.6 processor and 502 meg ram (which i upgraded to 2gig for $80) from best buy. got the system with a bag for $350 bucks.
