Have Bucket, but no Songs

I just downloaded and installed the new Hoster Upgrade. When I went to Explore, Micro Technology Unlimited, Hoster, I then opened up Databases, and only Bucket was there.... What happened to songs? I tried to reinstall, and again the same thing. Any thoughts?

Thanks

In order to make Hoster more Vista compliant, songs.mdb as well as any file Hoster writes to (marksongs.txt error logs etc.) and any KMA's you had in there, were moved to a new spot where Vista won't try to hide them from users. Hoster doesn't write to the bucket.mdb, only reads it is why it didn't move.
Sorry I don't remember the exact path but you should find it in the manual or you can do a search for it on your computer.

Sam

Tried 3.319, now I can't find my songs.

Hello. I am using Vista Ultimate. I was using 3.318 and downloaded 3.319. I attempted to build the data base and no songs were found. I tried a search using ".kma" as my search word and could not find any of my 17000 kma files. I have tried a system restore and search again but did not find any Kma's. I think the same thing happen to Ernie. I have a old backup of my songs but I would rather find my most recent selections. Thanks.

Ernie,
I didn't realize you were using Vista. Vista hides files from programs (like Hoster) that were not made on the computer it is installed on. I don't have Vista but this is from a previous post:

"Open the folder in Windows Explorer they told you was the location of the file. Press the Compatability Files button up top. The files should appear."

I Hope This Helps!

Jim

Not seeing a compatability selection.

Hello. Thanks for the suggestion. I am not seeing a compatability selection of any type. I also went to Microsoft and got no help from their suggestions. And I tried using a shadow copy of the song folder to restore the kma's and it tried but then came up with a error that the files did not exist.

Ermie,
I wish I could be more help but I don't use Vista. There are members of this forum that do use Vista. I feel certain somebody will be able to help you soon. I believe that Vista is restricting your ability to access these files (for your own good in Mircosofts line of thinking), I just don't know how to get around it. Try working with the folder options.

Sorry I wasn't more help.

Jim

Not using Vista

I tried to rebuild, but still no songs. You could watch it rebuild, but don't know where it put them or how to find them.

Ernie,
Open the Rebuild database window. Up top find the folder where Hoster is looking for the KMA files. Does the location in the Rebuild window show the correct location where your song files are supposed to be located?
I am figuring you are using an external drive with that many songs. Did the drive letter change on that drive?

ddouglass,
When I open Build Songs Database, at the top where the Select Folder and the Delete Folder buttons are at... right underneath it has.. C:\Program Files\Micro Technology Unlimited\Hoster\Songs...... Below the Songs database destination folder (in green letters) C:\Documents and Settings\Ernie Higgs.ERNIEHIGGS\Local Settings\Application Data\MTU\Hoster\Databases\...........NOW, when I open explore the only things I can find is C:\Documents and Settings\Ernie Higgs.ERNIEHIGGS... There is no \Local Settings\Application Data\MTU\Hoster\Databases\.

All of my KMA files are on my external HD. My hard drive is "F". This is the first time I've downloaded an upgrade and had any kind of problem. After going over and over on how to rebuild a song database in the manual... BOTH!! brain cells have shut down. Hope you can shed some light on this problem. I do hope I've given you enough information that you can make heads or tails out of it.

Thank You!

Delete the two locations that are listed in that window and add the F: drive location. Then Build the database.

The reason for the change this time is MTU is trying to get everything compliant with Vista and that means moving the location of files from the Program Files area to the user's profile area.

If you want to see what is in the Local Settings folder open Windows Explorer. Open Tools/Folder Options then click on the View tab up top. Change the settings to allow for viewing of hidden files and folders and the two items below that to see the extensions and system files.

ddouglass,
I am only able to delete and replace the one address that is under the Select Folder & Delete Folder buttons. I am not able to delete the other address under the Songs database destination folder... The address in GREEN letters. Hope there's a next step.

Thank You

Did you add the F: drive location? If not do so and then rebuild.

This is what I did everytime I have some song that I can't find.

Go to c:\program files\micro technology unlimited\hoster\databases and delete all *.mdb except bucket.mdb.Then open hoster and hoster will begin building song database. Once it's done, you're back again. But now that i installed 3.319, i have to delete also all *.mdb's except bucket.mbd at this location c:\documents and settings\my name\local settings\application data\mtu\hoster\databases. Then open hoster and it will begin building the database. It always work for me, guys....

Thanks bendrew. That's about as simple as it gets.

However, if you are installing 3.319 with UPDATE, I'd suggest using REMOVE, then run the install program again and it will INSTALL. As has been pointed out, 3.319 is SUPPOSED TO auto detect all "working/modifiable files" in the old C:\Program Files\... path, move them to the new path, and delete the old (original) path copies.

3.319 moves these files (or creates them if installing on a new "non-Hoster" computer) whether you are installing under Windows 2000, XP or VISTA. Microsoft has wanted us to do this all along apparently, but failed to make it clear. With VISTA, its no longer an option, but mandatory!

I did rebuild the song database, but here's the problem.
When you open the Build Songs Database box, at the bottom it says Songs database destination folder. Now, the green words are the destination.....My green destination is:
C:\Documents and Settings\Ernie Higgs.ERNIEHIGGS\local
Settings\Application Data\MTU\Hoster\Databases\
Now! Here is where it gets wierd..... I open Explore, go to C:\Documents and Settings\Ernie Higgs.ERNIEHIGGS....
THAT'S IT! There is no local Settings\Application Data\MTU\Hoster\Databases\
Now! Here is the second weird thing.... In Explore there is another Ernie Higgs in C, so I go to C:\Documents and Settings\Ernie Higgs\Local Settings\Application Data... and then it stops there. After Application Data, there is no MTU\Hoster\Databases........... I don't know how to locate my SONGS!!! In the Songs database destination folder, I have no idea how Hoster came up with that destination!!!
Since my kma files are on an external hard drive, should I just blow away Hoster and reinstall the whole program, and then do a Rebuild Song Database? Also, If I do need to blow everything away and reinstall, is the upgrade the complete program or just an upgraded section of the program?
I just want to get SONGS back into C:\program files\MTU\Hoster\Databases
Please hurry with some help... I started out with two brain cells, and now I'm down to one.

Believe me, everyone's help is truley appreciated!!!!!!

This happens when XP has aproblem with your profile. It will create a secondary profile to fix the problem area. This shouldn't be any concern though, so just leave it as it is.

The upgrade is a complete program. You would not need to go back and install any previous version. As Admin said you should use the Remove instead of the Upgrade on this one. However I think you are all right and just confused. Add the external drive folder location to the list in the Build Database window and then rebuild. That should get everything back to normal. If that doesn't do it then uninstall and re-install.

This is something that isn't going to happen, because Microsoft (not MTU) doesn't want working files (files you or a program writes to) in the Program Files area. It really wasn't a problem until Vista came along but it is a major problem now for them. That is why MTU had to move those files.

ddouglass,
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! You led me right to the file. I did drag and drop that file in it's normal place but the Song database destination folder still shows the same address, so I put it back. I then did a copy and paste. I can now use it again from the original address, but I would have to copy and paste everytime I added songs.... How come the bucket didn't move to the new address? Regardless, I'm just happy to know I didn't loose my songs.

Agani, Thanks a million
Ernie

Because Hoster never writes to that file, it's a read only file only.
