I have always kept all of my KMA files in one folder so I have never merged a database. There are other folks who have done this that know more about it than me.
Open Office is a program like any other program. After you install it and use it for what you want, uninstall it if you don't like it. In your case it would be a good thing to have because Microsoft Office is so expensive.
Don't be afraid of it, it's a good program.
