SND size - Problem solved by NOT using Arial Black font

I have one little issue with the SND. I originally set my display to show 3 singers per line with 2 lines. I also show estimated time. I was playing around with the display settings and added a third line to possibly show 9 singers instead of 6. When I applied changes, the window size doubled to 4 lines worth of space. I changed back to 2 lines displayed and the window reduced to 3 lines of space. I tried changing fonts, font size, eliminating times and every other option I could see to change and I can't get rid of that extra line of space. I didn't make any changes to the intermission screen and it is still displaying correctly. I used the settings from the intermission screen to copy all the settings back to the show display to no avail. I ended up just enlarging the window and stretched the extra space off screen. The other way to make up for it was to hide the marquee, but I thought I might play around with different messages and didn't want to lose that.

Did you try closing Hoster and re-opening it to see if it corrected itself?
You could also try setting it to one line and then back to two to see if that will fix it.
I think your stretching the space limits trying to get 3 per line. Especially if you are showing name, title and elapsed time. The problem may be overflow which is causing it to wrap.

No, I am only showing singer's name and time. I tried setting to 1 line with no names in the list yet and it still takes up 2 line spaces. I tried just name with 1, 2, and 3 lines. Still has the extra line space at the bottom. I tried changing the font size to 4pt and various fonts but still no love. Like I said, I just stretched extra line space of the window down below the viewable area so it isn't noticeable to anyone but me. What is strange to me though, is the intermission screen was not affected. It's no deal breaker because once I start karaoke, there is not ever a break until closing time.

While writing this I just thought of something I didn't try. You gave me an idea when you suggested I may have overstretched the bounds of a line wrap. Even though I am not displaying more than 10-12 characters per entry with the name/time, it may have a default minimum spacing. I will try making the window wider tomorrow night and see if that will clear it up. I may have inadvertently made the window narrower when I was stretching it to fill the screen.

Hey Mark,
The SND uses HTML. Keep this in mind as you try different things, font type, font size, how many singers per line, yadda yadda. (I'm assuming you've worked with HYML, If not just ignore me. )

This may help or I may be preaching to the choir. Just a thought.

Let me know if this keeps giving you fits and I'll make some time and see what I can come up with. Showing more than three singers seems a little much to me but you know your clubs needs! We'll find a combo that works for you.

Jim

Yeah, I've tried all the combinations I could think of. I even meticulously copied all the settings from my intermission display which seems to be unaffected. I usually run a 30-45 rotation, so having 9 singers listed is almost a must. I would like to display 20-30 if I thought it would be legible. That's why I made the suggestion in New Features to use the extra real estate on a wide screen display. I could also use a third monitor if the windows were separated. 1 for me, 1 for the singer, and one for the audience. I would need to have the words doubled to the audience monitor though, so a wide screen format would be easier to implement for MTU.

It's like that for me at my Tuesday night gig, normally an hour and a half wait to sing. I'm up, let me work with it on 4.04 beta 4 and see what I come up with.

No, my background is yellow and deb is never mad

Seriously though, it looks almost like that but I use a smaller font and there is one extra line of blank space below the 3 lines. It is not like that in the intermission display, only in the show display.

Mark,
You may have the preview screen and the show diplay screen mixed up. On my preview screen there is a blank space below the last line in the singer display. You can see it on the attachments I made on the last post.

To test this, go to tools> show display...> preview section and uncheck the "Unlock And Resize" box. Reatart Hoster and the preview display will go back to it's default position.

Mad Deb is my wife, Mrs. Mad Jim.

No, but that is what it looks like on the show display now that you mention it. I am not too worried about it though. I still haven't brought my other machine home to upgrade it yet so I don't have Hoster in front of me right now. I am going to hit the sack and I'll try a couple of things tomorrow when I go in in. (ok, in 5 hours) Thanks for the time and the effort.

Since that is the case, it looks like they fixed it in 4.04.

Mark, you are not using Arial Black font are you? That font doesn't have the correct line height so shows an extra line.

Dale is the best! I'm sorry for not bringing this up Mark., I thought you knew for some reason. I know it's been discused but maybe it wasn't in the public forum. MY BAD.

This is in the manual a couple of time under "Singer Names Area" of the 'Show Display... Command" section:

WARNING: DO NOT use "Arial Black" font as it has an error.

Thanks for the back-up Dale!

I spoke too soon, it's back. I fired the comp up to load some new CDGs and it was back. I'm heading off to the bar right now, but will report back when I get done tonight. I will spend a little more time and take some notes to narrow this down a little.

Remember Mark, there are six font setting in the show display, three for the lyrics view and three for the intermission view. Be sure you change all of them.

I did change them all at least in the lyrics view. I didn't want to change anything in the intermission view because it ain't broke. I did use the settings as a guide to copy from. No luck. I then set the name, time, and title (even though not displayed) to 10pt and tried every font in my list. I only have about a dozen fonts because Windows has to load all True Type Fonts at startup. After any clean install, I go to the folder with all the fonts and delete most of them. When Dale asked about using Ariel Black, I thought that was probably the first font on the list, and I would have defaulted to that. When I had checked it was just plain Ariel, not Ariel Black. Since I was running a yellow background with a red font color, I then tried changing colors of fonts and background colors and had no effect.

Like I said earlier in this thread, it is not a big enough deal to spend one more second on trying to figure it out. I just stretched my screen to hide it and I don't have to give it one more thought. Thanks for wasting your time on this extremely trivial matter. Sometimes if I just walk away from an issue, I will come across something later that will give me a clue as to what I should have tried. If I happen to re-visit this and get it fixed I will let you all know.

Mark,
Time is never wated when we are woking together to make Hoster better which I do not see as trival. If nothing eles we are aware of the problem and have narrowed it down, with your help. If anybody else has the same problem they will read this post, follow your advice and maybe help locate it's source.

I want to thank you for taking your time to participate in this forum. You are a big help in my opinion.

Jim

Fixed

I finally figured out the problem. It is because I am a complete friggin idiot

Tonight when I went in, I took a fresh set of TT fonts in to see if I had something corrupted. After I reinstalled the fonts, it still wasn't fixed. I went back to check the options again and BINGO I guess I had missed the title display line. It was set at 24pt. I thought I had checked that, but for some reason I missed it. I guess when I changed that I forgot to hit apply. Rookie mistake. I don't display the title and guess I put less emphasis on that line since I thought it shouldn't matter. Well, it does matter. Sorry to have wasted everyone's time on this. I should never have been so careless.

Time NOT wasted

I have been using 4.03 and never any problems (OK, the zip thing i overcame was minor).

I noticed my display lines were a little funky; never lost any sleep and things ran fine.....

Just tried out display....was using ARIAL BLACK....changed to some other font (COmic sans MS?) ....runs perfect

No, you did not waste time on this thread Markl.....you just gave another MTU user a great tip to make his show better!

Thank you! (and MadJim & Dale (I don't do shows commercially...but run lots for parties, family, Weekend festivals, picnics etc. so I do appreciate a clean running system!)
