It will only beable to take a .wav file. As this would then have to Uncompress the mp3 file then recompress it into a .cdg file. Doing this you would lose alot of quality so it will always take a .wav file for Audio.

Convert mp3 to wave

I don't know what "mucking around" you need to do. For those who might think it involves making a disc and then extracting waves, that is not the best way. There are lots of programs (some free) that will take an mp3 and create a wave faster that you can say "I wanna make a cdg file using mp3"

mp3's do represent a loss of quality from the original. Waves don't. Of course a wave made from an mp3 will carry that mp3's quality loss.

If you just want to be able to play your mp3 songs on the same disc as your karaoke cdg songs, that can be done without khpro.

Make a disc from your mp3 songs, and then import them in microstudio using the cdg setting. I don't know what you call the resultant file, but it burns onto a disc just like the other cdg files.
