Question eliminating background noise

Is there a way one can get rid of background noise behind a speaker? I have a piece of tape that has the rumble of people speaking behind the main audio source and I'd like to "tone it down" or eliminate it all together. Thanks. Susan

....it is possible, but...

Using the old DOS-based DNois program, I have actually successfully eliminated lots of low level traffic noise, etc. from a voice outdoors, but it was tricky and painstaking work.

How far you can get with this is dependent in part on how loud the background noise is.

I have not used the newer DNois (DirectX) for this kind of work yet, so can't give you any tips, but have used the Cool Edit to do some similar stuff......Picking the right template section makes a huge difference, and running the program several times with less severe settings can yield pleasant results.
