The "other events" (private parties in a banquet hall?) part I dont know for sure but for bars it is a definate NO. The licensing covers the venue not the performor. One license (or at least one license from each licensing agency) covers karaoke, DJ, and live bands. About the only thing it won't cover is the juke box which is a separate license and usually whoever they rent the juke box from pays that one.

The bar is legally obligated to pay and it is the bar and not you that will end up in court if it's not paid. That's not to say the bar can't require you to chip in if you want to keep your gig. I've never heard of that happening but I know some bar owners who would probably do it if they had thought of it.

Sam

BTW it's BMI (Broadcast Music Inc.)

Sam Is Right we dont have to pay it is up to bar or club to pay.
private clubs dont need it, and ascap wont sell lic to you.

According to the research my wife did, for private parties you only need a license if the party is for 300 or more people.
