Exclamation .BIN and .CDG File Formats - MTU has changed our .CDG file content

Tracks on a CDG disc contain the music and the "RW" graphics/lyrics data. That is what MTU .CDG files contain, and what .BIN files also contain if they have the RW data. Programs that work with MP3+G formats title their "G" files .CDG. This is what has been accepted worldwide as the .CDG "standard".

At June 10, 2006, it is clear that the world has accepted the .BIN format with music and RW codes, and the .CDG format with only RW code. Thus, MTU is discontinuing use of our .CDG format for importing or creating files on a hard drive. We will continue to support our .CDG files that already exist. You can use Windows Explorer to change a .CDG file extension to .BIN.

Microstudio 3.000 and higher will only import .BIN files. It will allow adding .CDG and .BIN files to the new Write Disc Tab (was Custom Assembly).

KHPro 4.105 and higher will no longer export .CDG files, but instead will export .BIN and .KMA files that are compressed to take less room and work directly with Hoster and other MTU programs.

Hoster 3.310 and higher will continue to convert .CDG files to .KMA files.

The .bin filename extension is still NOT a safe industry standard. That is why MTU refused to support this in our products. To be an international standard, a file extension SHOULD ONLY relate to one file type. The .bin extension is NORMALLY used for making entire disc backups, not for individual tracks. This includes being used for a CDROM disc image, which has nothing to do with the Karaoke CDG format. To ASSUME a .bin file is a .cdg file is not safe.

In Microstudio 2.609, MTU added the ability to use .bin files, including error checking to insure the .bin file is a track file with the CDG data in it, instead of a DISC IMAGE file or a CDROM IMAGE file.

  1. In the Import Tracks Tab, the .bin saved files are in the correct CD+G format. Thus, .bin files created by Microstudio are correct, and identical to .cdg files.

  2. In the Custom Assembly Tab, we cannot know for sure that a .bin file you may open to add to the Songlist is from Microstudio. Thus, we present warning messages (since few users will read the manual with its warnings) every time you open a .bin file. This insures that you know IF SOMETHING GOES WRONG, IT IS PROBABLY YOUR .BIN FILES ARE NOT TRUE CD+G FORMAT CONTENT.
