Hell I thought I was old as a good majority of my crowd is in their 20's-lower 30's.

61, started about 6yrs ago, the wife has been at it for 15yrs (good move on my part) Karaoke and DJ was going to be my retirement business kinda a Plan B if you will. Got going well enough when GM offered me a good pension and a $35K bonus to retire, Plan B became Plan A. Sometimes I think being a minister gets me gigs when I tie a few knots, and ask if they have a DJ and vice versa. Last two I done became Karaoke fests, and with Hoster I love it.

Hey All,
Looks like I take the honour of being the oldest member of our little community. 72 in May, have been dabbling with this stuff for approx 20 years. Didn't get into it really seriously until I discovered MTU about 6 years ago. Our area is getting a bit depressed with a lot of useless KJs, who have all the right equipment but really couldn't run a booze up in a brewery. Money is also depreciating with some KJs working for £40 ($80 US) for 4 hours I don't really need the money but wouldn't work for that paltry fee, rather do it on a voluntary basis for groups who benefit the community. The response from retirement homes is really staggering. Everybody likes to sing!!!! Regards from across the pond Garry |

Very true Bob. I also find the older I get, the less patience I have seem to with the "immature" ones out there regardless of their age.

they put in the artist name instead of their name. or they point at the mics and ask, do these things work. I tell them no i just put them there for decoration, so sing real loud.

Gee what happens when all of us AARP seniors decide to retire? Does karaoke become a thing of the past? Like CB radio?

Elvis Costello, Beatles - a little shelled insect, & Ed Sullivan the name of the theater that David Letterman runs his 'really big shoe' from... I showed my kid an 8 Track tape cartridge and vinyl 45's/LP's, he didn't have a clue. He's seen reel to reel tapes before as we have/use an older Tascam 8 track multi-tracker. And yes I do know what cb is lol.

AND FOR THE REALLY YOUNG THAT THINK KARAOKE IS NEW.
The Japanese didn't really start anything, they simply warmed up an old concept and put a few twists on it. Back in the thirties you could go to a movie theater, and sandwiched in between a double feature,(that's right, two full length features), a cartoon, sometimes a continued weekly serial(Superman, Red Ryder Western thriller, etc) and world news, you may have a brief sing along session. There would be music playing and lyrics on the silver screen with a bouncing ball going from word to word in tempo to the music. Sound somewhat familiar anyone ? A bandleader named Mitch Miller enjoyed popularity with his reheat of it in a television series called "Sing Along With Mitch" sometime around the 50's or 60's, once again using the bouncing ball concept. Major change is that the early versions had the lead instruments in the score. So much for the history lesson. |
