Sony weren't much help.

Checked with Sony about the VAIO that I have. The pain in the you-know-what answer was

"Jerry, We do not have the specific information online with us regarding the video and on DirectX which is third party products. You may try installing it however we can not assure you the compatibility." (that was word for word, ugh. Gotta love competant tech support).

After all this hulabaloo, I'm pretty sure that answer means there is no tested compliance between my video chip and DirectX 9.0c.

*sigh*

What now?

Here's a link to the Sony support page. Try plugging in your Notebook model number and see if there are still any drivers available for your model. Looks like quite a few are listed.

This may sound late and stupid, but I tried to use my laptop with battery power instead of plugged in and it almost made me puke. The graphics were so slow I couldn't believe it. I plugged it in and everything was fine!

Unfortunately for me, three hours of tech support calls and live chats (often at the same time) have yielded nothing for me. The only "supported" updated S3 Savage driver they support is the one on the Recovery CD (that's three years old!). After looking to S3, there is no driver available post-2003 - much earlier than DirectX 9.0.

At this point. Rather than continuing to pull my hair out over this, I'd just as soon ask again for a reset registration code to use the program on my desktop PC (which is MORE than capable). I think even the fine folks at MTU would agree this is excessive work to retain a single license copy.

Or, at least, I hope so.

From the Hoster Lite details page http://mtu.com/basics/karaoke-hosterlite.htm
towards the bottom under "computer requirements"

Quote:
* Graphics video card with 32MB or more of RAM. GRAPHICS CARD ABSOLUTELY MUST support Direct-X 9.0 or higher (Go to your graphics card manufacturer's web site to find out; cards with less that 32MB RAM probably won't support 9.0). Dual-display requires an ATI Radeon 9000 or higher, or NVidia equivalent. S3 video cards don't support Direct-X 9.0.

Thanks Sam.

Had I thought this was a problem, I wouldn't have installed it. However, pointing out my obvious lack of attention to detail doesn't solve anything. Thanks for that though. I feel so much better now.
