I sense that this may all have come about because of the changes I've made both in replacing Vista with XP and in changing the settings in XP in order that Hoster will run to it's fullest potential.

I want to thank you guys for your efforts but I'm going to have to rely in your knowledge and experience further.

Lloyd.
If you put a disk in the drive and close it does the drive spin up like it is trying to read it?
This is sounding more and more like your drive has died. Do you have somewhere locally that you can take it to get the laptop checked out? They should be able to check the drive and see if it is working ok.

Yep it does Dale. When I put a disk in, it spins, makes all the right noises and the light flashes as it does normally....

Thanks so much for your advice Joe. Unfortunately there is no CD/DVD drive icon in Device Manager so it looks like I will have to try the method you recommended earlier.

Did it work right.... at any time after you installed windows xp? If so maybe a system restore, If not I would start over with a clean install of xp.
Do you have a external HD you could try?

Thumbs down

Yes it certainly did. I had loaded about 3000 songs into the system and I usually play a portion of a track from each disk after I load them to make sure that they've downloaded properly, then I noticed that it was taking a lot longer to download each song than usual but I put that down to a dirty or worn disk, gave them a clean and started the process again but that didn't seem to improve things and then I noticed the strange apparent skipping audio sound blah blah blah and that's where I am at present....and yes I do have an external HD

Hi all,
The current situ is I've followed Joe's advice and used "method two" as per his earlier thread not knowing what to expect. It went thru it's paces very quickly and I thought that I would then find the CD/DVD icon back in the Device Manager and that Hoster would then recognise the drive also. No such luck I'm afraid, it hasn't changed anything. I'm left wondering whether I missed a step.

In answer to dtbice's query, no I don't have an external CD/DVD drive available but I will try a system restore next and see how it goes. This function is currently disabled but I can soon turn it back on.

Will keep you all posted.

Cheers everyone!
Lloyd

If you didn't have restore turned on you may be out of luck with it. If it's not on it won't record any restore points, and by the same token when it gets turned of it erases any recorded restore points. Maybe you'll get lucky and find that you thought it was off but it was actually on.

Hi Lloyd

Sorry to see you go thru so mush trouble, something maybe wiped out your cd Rom drivers or your cd Drv is Not making proper connection. There is a fix for your problem But I need some info.

1) What brand & model computer do you have?

2) Was XP OS full version (not for another computer)?

3) Did you install the drivers that came with your model?

Hi Joe,

Here's the info you wanted.

1. Toshiba Satellite A100 laptop
2. XP came with the desk top I'm using at present. I have Hoster on this computer also and have never had a problem with it even though there are a lot of other programmes on it.
3. I had a friend of a friend un-install Vista and install XP. He is IT and assures me that all drivers required were installed also.

Lloyd.

Have you been able to remove the drive and reinstall it. For a Toshiba it is only one screw, located on the bottom of the laptop at the back corner of the drive. Remove the screw and the drive will slide out. Goes back in as easy as it comes out. Worth a try. I think if you had your system restore disabled you will not have a restore point to go back to....

Ok Lloyd

1) Try to get your IT friend to remove and reset the CD/DVD Drive as advised to you earlier by ddouglass sometimes a slight knock can loosen a pin connection to the drive.

2) If that don't work then maybe your driver files are damaged or corrupted.

3) Reinstall your CD/DVD drivers, that should do the job.

4) Please let me know if this works for you.

Good Luck Joe....

Ps the fix I gave you earlier would have worked if your Cd Icon was availible in your divice manager. (sorry)

Yes I agree it's worth a try. If it's as simple as re-inserting the disk drive then I'm all for it. I don't have a screw driver with a fine enough tip so I'll do as you suggest Joe and get the guy who installed XP to do it for me which hopefully will be in the next day or two.

I'm grateful to you all for your help with this. Will keep you all posted.

Gracias,
Lloyd

It sounds as if the device driver for the drive is not loaded. My recommendation is to go to the mfr's website and reload the driver with one from the vendor. XP will have a tendency to not load a driver if it is not certified.
