i've been reading about compressed files and most of the suggestions ( easiest way ) was to reload xp ...jus like Roy suggested.( sorry Bryant)

I'll third that suggestion for re-install. I know it can be a pain, but it will be a lot quicker and more reliable. While your at it, do a custom install and do away with the crap you don't need. Then visit BlackViper before you load any programs. The whole process can be done in 3 hours for a newbie. I've got it down to about 90 minutes.

That is only if you do not have to download all those updates from Microsoft.

Oh yeah, I forgot. I keep all the updates on a separate drive for just such an occasion
