caught a virus

i just caught a virus on my cloned hhd, got it fixed now when i boot up my pc it it goes all the way to my log in, but stays that way, no icons just my wallpaper, cant even turn it off without doing a hard shut down, anyone has any idea on how to get my icons back

i had to re-install my original hhd, but it only has 20g free space left...and i have about 3,000 kma files on MS and 4,672 songs in itunes on the cloned hhd

Without being there I can't be for sure, but it sounds like a corrupted Explorer.exe. See if you can copy that file from a working HDD to it.

If that won't work try running the Repair from your original Microsoft disk. Do not reload the OS as that will wipe out the disk.

i put the cloned hhd. in an external case, and my intention was to either reformat /repair or load the missing file , but my pc cant even see it, clicked on the hardware tab and it's not showing..even acronis cant find it..

Hi ddouglass

I had a problem with a HD wouldn't boot after turn off.

Booted with my xp os disc went to repair option then it wanted a pass word wouldn't let me continue without entering a pass word I didn't have.

I bought the xp os oem from micro computer store in a sealed package why would I need a pass word for a repair?

That would be the Administrator's password it is looking for. I had my show machine do this to me one night, but I found out it was my Bios that caused it. It had changed which drive was my boot drive and was trying to boot from D:

Well I tried my amin pass word and it didn't work I still haven't got it to work from my os disc.

Any Ideas?

I fixed the problem using spinRite seems the Bios didn't write back to disc properly when shutting down and according to SpinRite this happens quite often.

That's a program I haven't used in years! I used to have a copy back in the NT/2000 days.
If it isn't the admin password I am not sure what it is. That is what we always used.

I looked into Microsoft but they have Money Road blocks every which way you turn to ask a question.

Is there another way I can get an answer?

I bought the thing why do I need a piss me off word to use it?

Did you try leaving it blank and try going on?
Is this an OEM type of disk (original Microsoft disk) or is it a Restore disk from the computer MFG?

No it's OEM bought at Micro computer store seal package installed it registered it no payment plans nothing.

well, i ended up buying a new hhd, bought a 500gb and ended up cloning my original hhd drive and while im at it i decided to upgrade m memory to 4gb,now here comes the hard part, i have to reload all my kma files to ms and all my itunes, since this pc ( master ) is where i store all my music files..

, i could just import all my kma files that was on my ext. hhd to ms , but i have never done it before

..so..

Billy,
You should be able to plug the drive in (not as C: drive) and copy the files off of it rather than having to reload them again. That is as long as they are not damaged.

no they are not damaged i have a master ext. hhd that has all my kma files..there are about 3,000 songs on the damaged hhd that i just replaced i only used them when i'm trying to rehearsed or trying out new tunes..
