I hear you, I'm thinking about picking up a Wal Mart special with XP in it while their supplies last use it just for online use and take this one off line semi permanent. My first office pc an HP with xp is still working well for my daughter and her family.

All of the Microsoft operating systems tend to save a lot of junk in your login profile. When you sign in, it has to load that profile in with the system. I found one of the biggest start up speed savings was to take the all documents out of the profile and put them in another location. I never save anything to My Documents. The other thing is to keep the "Local Settings" temporary files down to minimum. This area is one of the biggest reasons computers tend to slow down the longer we use them. Stripping it and reloading the operating system is one way to fix it (drastic) since you escentially start over with a clean profile.
Of course the second biggest is stopping processes that are not needed such as the indexing.
