Is this a desktop or a laptop? It may be losing the video from the VGA signal and then the outboard video will switch to primary. Here are some suggestions.
Check the VGA connection before startup. Replace the VGA cable. I would hate to suggest it, but there is a possibility that the primary video may be on the way out.
