When did you purchase it? What CD drive brand and model is it? The filters are not the only thing that can keep the drive from working especially if it works in all the other programs.

Whits,

Are you sure in the regedit part of the fix that you located the right drawer? The number included in the fix is long and easily can take you to the wrong one. Also, you must reboot afterwards for the computer to recognize the drives once more. Try it again and be very careful with the string of numbers.

Details

Ok, the laptop, purchased from MTU back when version 3 of Hoster was the latest (not sure of date) is a Durabook, model R15D. I'm using, now, Hoster version 3.321a. The cd/dvd drive (came installed, only one in it) is an Optiarc DVD/RW AD-5540A. Shows up under device manager and is functioning correctly with all programs except for Hoster. The driver is signed by Microsoft Windows Publisher and is version 5.1.2535.0.

I'm sure of the correct registry key (the same one Hoster tech was having me look at.

Screenshot shows directory. After I did a system restore to an earlier date, the upperfilters returned with some data, but no lowerfilters. Yes, I've removed the filters and restarted the computer on previous attempts.

Thanks for the help!

screenshot too fuzzy

Oh well, wanted to try attaching a screenshot. Anyway, it's the registry listed in your tip. Deleted both upper and lowerfilters and restarted, cd drive still not working in Hoster (tried reinstalling Hoster numerous times).

no filters reinstalled when Hoster is reinstalled

well, i guess the subject line says it! Checked again and no filters were replaced when I updated Hoster. Nor when I deleted it entirely and reinstalled it.

There are some other things I did afterwards as Hoster would not work on my laptop but would on my office computer. First of all someone recommended that I check to make sure since I had XP that I had Service Pack 3 which is latest upgrade. I did not so I installed it. Then Hoster would lock up every other click and madjim recommended that I check for new video drivers. I did, downloaded an upgrade and walaaaah everything worked fine. I just searched google for Compaq drivers, selected and downloaded graphics drivers.

I can't tell from the graphic on your last post about the number but I'm sure you looked pretty good at it!

Hang in there, there is something probably really small that is not right. Don't give up on Hoster because once you get it going, you'll love it.

Whit when was the last time you updated the computer from Microsoft Updates web site? As Steve said SP3 really is a must for both security and updates of operating system utilities.
Also, I would check and see if there is updated firmware and drivers out there for that CD drive. MTU makes sure those laptops are up-to-date when you buy them but you have to keep them updated. Search the internet for Optiarc (and try under NEC also) to find the drivers and firmware.

cd drive woes

Yes, in the tools menu, i'm not able to save a drive, because no drive will show up..even when typing the drive in manually and attempting to save or by hitting the "show/hide" button.

I'll do the sp3 update..not sure which sp its running, but the computer gets auto update popups and has been updated each time.

Tech updated the ticket and called me back today, but i was out. They are working to help us out, so that's good. I'll post any updates here. Thanks again for your help.
