Vista Audio Playback Problem

The Hoster audio playback on all/any song/s is scratchy, or has slight dropouts. Almost sounds like static, but maybe more like a scratched record used to. The audio control dropout select options have no effect at all.

Great play in MicroStudio. No problems, etc. Same with the playback in other cd players of the disc created in MS from these .kma files, etc. Used multiple brand discs and it makes no diff. All music on the cpu plays fine using the Windows Media Player or I-Tunes player. All brand cdg songs have same/similar playback problems when played back in Hoster. Video/lyrics normal and good, etc.

Used files imported via normal Hoster cd import, MS created files and hdd import into Hoster, as well as singer's cdg import function on Hoster main screen. At least two songs were imported using a Plextor 716A, and the rest were with the internal burner on the laptop. All experienced the same bad audio problems when played using Hoster. The audio sounds like a scratched record with occasional skips, etc. Certainly identifiable as to the song it is, just not what you want to publicly play during your show.

Have tried a lot of the fixes ref'd on this forum. Auto play off, Windows uptodate, sounds off (always get a beep still when song selected in the search box). Set Virtual Memory to at least double RAM. Getting kinda frustrated with this problem.

I use Hoster for shows on two other cpu's. Both have XP, and I loaded all the cdg's, etc. This to let you know I've got a little experience with Hoster. No problems at all on the other set ups.

Any ideas welcome.... Thanks!

Dave

I believe the problem is with the speaker setup in audio.
go in and set it to headphones and see if that helps.

Vista Audio Problems.... update and correct the system info.

DD....sorry I left off some of the laptop info. Here it is and also corrected the cpu processors to 1.6ghz. I'd done all the original info from memory, as the laptop had to go and do a show tonight, so I didn't have it at hand when posted.

Bob Cox. Will try that speaker change to headphone as you mentioned.

Thx, both of you for replying.

Thanks.
Do you have all the updates from this location?
http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/t...all_docs=false
Not sure the link will work, but if you use the base site, go to downloads, select your model, that should get you there.
I had a Toshiba Satellite that was taken when my house was broken into but if I remember correctly the internal sound was very distorted.
I hope what Bob has said about the speaker setting will help.

Thanks, DD. The link worked fine and I bookmarked it also for future ref. To my knowledge these updates have not been applied.... most likely not.

The laptop in question belongs to my best friend and sorta still business partner. We backstop each other on overbooks and overflow karaoke and d/j jobs. He's really busy with his day job and a couple regular weekly gigs. I'm retired so I have all the time, etc. Had to give the 'puter back for him to do a show tonight. Will get it back asap and commence to do these Toshiba updates, as well as try the 'fix' from Bob Cox.

Will let you guys know how it turns out asap.

Thx, again.

I have an A105 S2236. Almost the same specs. Same amount of memory. I could never get it to stop the dropouts when using Vista. I changed to Windows XP and the problem is gone. Good luck with Vista. I think it is a good operating system for high end equipment with lots of memory. Just not for a low end laptop like this.

Did you also have Vista Home Basic hwheeler43? Just trying to find a pattern to all these problems with Vista.

It was Vista Home Basic. Same size hard Drive and amount of memory. Intel celeron M 1.6. 80 gb hard drive. Obviously my processor is different. There were things I like about Vista, but the dropouts seemed to be impossible to fix. I did a lot of research and turned off a lot of features without being able to get rid of the dropouts. I had upgraded the memory from 512 k to 1.5 gb with no noticeable difference. I was starting to think it was a bad memory module until I switched to XP and found it to zoom along so well. I love XP. Hope this helps.

hwheeler....

Thx, for your posts also. Question, tho... were you able to somehow switch to XP from Vista on that same A135 Toshiba laptop? The reason for asking is that we put the l/t in the shop to have the op system changed from Vista to XP. The techs knew from prev experience that drivers weren't showing avlble for XP on this Toshiba l/t. They double chkd, and sure enuff, no drivers avlble, so no way to make XP work for us on this l/t. I called Toshiba support this morning to see if any kind of work arnd was poss. The tech guy said no, that this l/t was designed to work only with Vista. (btw, that is good info I will remember when buying my next cpu from any brand) I hate such limitations, etc., and just fyi to ya'll.

We will give the fixes all of you mentioned a try tonight and see if any improvement or correcting of the problem occurs. Will post the yeas or nays accordingly.

My thanks to all of you. Have lurked the forums for several years. Changed to memphisdave handle back in Aug. Prior to this posted once ref a work arnd for MS when Media Cloq and similar 'track 16' problems started to come into being. Saying that to say thanks for all the time and effort that the regulars and stalwarts put into this forum. It is invaluable, the service that is performed by these individuals.... and I for one am truly grateful!

Will advise asap the results of tonight's experiments.

Basically what you have to do is use drivers from a laptop that has similar specs and that came with XP. Toshiba support was wrong. It will work with XP. I did a google search on the subject and did a lot of research before I did the change. I also downloaded some drivers and saved them to a cd before changing as well. The only thing is that you will do is put the support on yourself. I simply took my laptop to my workplace and plugged the network connection into a spare port on the switch. Then I booted from my new oem version of XP and just reformatted the entire c drive. Then followed the screen instructions. It took about 3 hours including over 80 microsoft updates and driver installations. I have no hardware issues at all. It is really a personal choice. I am glad I changed mine. However, you may want to try other options. Good luck.

Hey, hwheeler43.

That's cool, man. Love it when someone can outfox the 'proprietaries'.... in a case like this. I admire your workaround success story. Good job!

The l/t in question is still under warranty, hardly 3 months old bought new, so I doubt my partner will go for your fix method. Will prob just try to pick up another one for the karaoke shows and use this one for d/j work, etc.

I will keep your method in mind.... Thx,

md
