Donn,
You shouldn't have to slow the Graphics acceleration down or set the resolution to 800x600. All the systems that I have tested here at the office, can run at whatever resolution I want them to be set at. You do have to change the Color Depth to 16 Bit anything above or below this will cause it to mess up.
