Unhappy Importing songs from my own numbered discs

What is the simplest and quickest way to import songs (while keeping a reasonably fast searching system) from my own discs that are already logged in my current songbook as disc numbers such as 854 , 855, etc., etc. Most discs contain about 18 songs each but only have the title and track in the file name ("title - track.bin"). I have renumbered all my brand-name discs as well with simple three digit numbers. Some discs are also filenamed as "artist - title", while some are filenamed as "title - artist". Will I have to rename all these files with a disc and track number in front of their filenames as I import them. Will I have to rename the "artist - track" ones to a "track - artist" sequence. That would take a year or two with 5,000 songs, wouldn't it? Help!

It appears that the fastest/easiest way to keep your custom numbering is to reimport from original CDG. Then you are only looking at a couple of weeks

To Beavis: Yes, but by re-doing my books only solves part of the question. I would still (or would I not) have to enter the disc and track number of every song in the program. Also, and would I still have to convert the songs that are "artist - title" back to "title - artist". Please clarify how you determined that re-doing my books will eliminate the work I had previously posted. Perhaps I am missing something, I am a brand new user still with NO experience whatsoever.

Thanx

To MindonStrike: Yes, but the original discs are numbered in my songbook with my own simplified numbering system, e.g., a three digit disc ID and track number only. The numbers on the original are usually long and cumbersome i.e., CBEP-6-04-01. Mine would say 888-1. SO I would still have the problem of my books not conforming to a more cumbersome numbering system. Also, I have re-arranged some songs on original discs to my own discs with their own numbers as well; to save space and not have too many junk songs.

Please explain exactly what you did and how you did it? How many songs? How long did it take? What prompts you to say "I'm glad I did"! Did you use the book ID and nothing else (just artist and track)? Please help again?

Based on your initial post it appears that your file system is extremely inconsistant which is what will make importing from the hard drive slow and cumbersome.Files that are numbered and corespond to a disk will be easy as you just tell Hoster the brand and diskid and the root id you wish to use for that disk, for example you select 888-1 and Hoster would place every file that starts with 888 into the import list, you then tell it that it is a Chartbuster brand with a disk id of CBEP456-4, you then tell it to assign the rootid of 888 to that disk, and in 2-3 minutes (about 10 seconds per track importing .bin's) that disk is done.
With files that do not have something like a number or diskid with a track # to tie them together, you will have to go through that whole process 1 song at a time
Quote:

The disk id is only used by Hoster to look up artist/title info when it is absent from the file, otherwise it has little to do with how you number things.

There are no rules saying you can't mix import methods. You could do the easy ones from the hard drive and the harder from CDG's. You'll just have to study your situation and see what's going to work best for you.

there is no easy way to correct the mis-match in the importing process you used.

i went back and corrected each song (spelling & first name first) it took a while, but my book is correct now and was well worth the time.

Your books and bood ID should look something like this when you use Hoster's book ID's. This is just pasted in so it don't look as good here. They come out in two colums, and have a line bewteen the artist and the book id.

BookID Question

So are you saying that the root BookID for the first song would be entered as 157700, and the tracks from that disc(up to 99 of them) are listed as 1577 - "track #). Is it possible to assign root bookID numbers to custom discs?
Am I correct in saying that the custom discs I have with no associated brand name would all have to be typed in one at a time. I have about 200 brand name discs that are renumbered I want to keep, and about 100 custom discs that would need typing in the songs. How much time am I talking about for the import process? Estimate please? thanx.

MindOnStrike...my file system is actually quite efficient as it stands now. All my discs have no more than 5 numbers for the requester to fill in along with the artist and title on the slip.
Also, there are no duplicate songs(of approx. 5,000 now) as there is in almost all song books(many contain 5 - 10 listings of the same song with song numbers of 4-5 letters and 10-12 numbers apiece.
I understand about the program rarely using the song number, but the requester needs to fill it in with the tite; as often they make a mistake and you need the song number for searching to compare accuracies.
That is why I feel a need to keep the numbering system.
My books now are really easy to read(3 columns: title, artist, and simple number), with not one duplicated song.
However, how long do you think it will take me to log in 200 discs that have a brand name associated with them but need a new rootbookID; and another 100 custom discs with NO associated brand name( I assume I have to enter the song titles one - by- one at the rate of 15 songs per disc)?
Can you give me an estimate of how much time might be involved in this import process?
Thanx a bunch, you guys have been a BIG help!
Bryant

Your file system may be efficient as it stands now. What I'm saying (if I'm reading your initial post correctly) is that with some files number only and some artist/title and some title/artist it will be slow and cumbersome to import

I was refering to Hoster using the diskid to lookup artist and title info for the importing process. If that info is already in the file name then an accurate diskid is not necesary. For me a song# or bookid is very important, I'm already having to deal with some KJ's in town no longer requireing it so some singers are not bothering to give me that info, I can do it that way but I don't want to. The people who give me incorrect song#s slow me up enough as it is.

Too many variables involved in your situation to even hazard a guess. At the time I had no hard drive files and Hoster wouldn't import them at the time if I did but it took me a couple of weeks of every spare minute to do 700 CDG's, of course that was using my numbering scheme as well as taking care to avoid duplicates which slowed things up I'm sure.
Studying the manual and experimenting with different files would give you a better idea.

Forgot to mention

My apologies to mindonstrike and Imcmains. I forgot to add that I have not imported anything yet. My system as stands now is for using the cdg's. Just recently purchased Hoster and want to get up and running as fast as possible and efficiently once I'm there, while keeping the same numbering system in my books. If I can't , I may hold off on going to Hoster for a while.
Thanx again, keep replying as I do need your trusted expertise!

if you buy hoster you will only have to deal with one number per song. no more artist and title to fill out. each song is assigned a number.

Beavis; please listen to my question? I already have song numbers that work fine and do not wish to change the numbering system as I have spent much time and bukkarooson newly printed books that get all kinds of compliments as compared to the competition.

My real question is how long would you expect it to take to import those songs I mentioned in the previuos posts?

I realize each song is assigned a number, but singers request for title artist and by number because many times they put the wrong number in and you need to have the title or artist as well.

you can import using your system.

it takes about 3 to 4 minutes per cdg to import.

Yes Beavis;
But I was referring to my special situation of loading a number of custom discs and brand name discs that need to be rset up so the rootbookid end up matching my existing disc numbers and track numbers. Will you please take a look at my post above and tell me what you might think a total time might be. Remember, my importing was a little unusual because of my persistence to retain my current song book and numbering system?
Thanx,
Bryant

I have been reading this post, and have become a little confused. One nice thing about Hoster is, regardless of what your karaoke book number system is...Hoster still works. I know a few KJ's who have NO disc numbers in their books, or use NO books at all. I prefer a book because your singers like to look; and it gives them something else to do while waiting their turn. When importing, you can use " custom disc " and use any number you want. As far as how long, doesn't that depend on how many discs you intend to download? Sorry if I'm not on track with this one.

in hoster you can search or enter by book id or brand. you can create your own brand by typing something in the brand slot. you dont have to choose what MTU put in there. where it say "select brand" just type what you want.

you dont have to use the book-id to enter singers choice.

i hope this is'nt getting confusing.

What is the simplest...way to import songs...from my own discs that are already logged in my current songbook as disc numbers such as 854 , 855, etc., etc.
With this example, I will use Disc #854
With Hoster OPEN:
1. Insert Disc #854 in the CDROM.
2. Open the IMPORT CD TRACKS Window.
3. Click the DROP DOWN arrow to the right of the BRAND and select CUSTOM ASSEMBLY
4. Click INTO the DISCID Box and TYPE the Number 854
5. Click INTO the BOOKID Box and TYPE the Number 854
6. Click the ADD TRACKS TO IMPORT Button

STOP! Read the response to the second question before proceeding.

Quote:
What is the...quickest way to import songs...from my own discs that are already logged in my current songbook as disc numbers such as 854 , 855, etc., etc.
Your ACTUAL Discs may contain Title and Artist info, before the .BIN extension, but Hoster WILL NOT be able to populate its TITLE and ARTIST List Box when the ADD TRACKS TO IMPORT Button (#6 above) is Clicked.

Therefore, the answer to your second question is:
There is NO QUICK WAY...period.

Continue to STEP 7:
7. TYPE in all TITLE and ARTIST information into that correspond to EACH Trk.
8. Click the SELECT ALL Box to CHECK it, if it has not already been Checked.
9. Click PROCESS SELECTED TRACKS.
DONE.
REPEAT for EACH Disc that you have.

Make a note as to the time it takes to process Disc #854. Multiply that times the number of Discs you have left to get the time it will take to complete the task.

With the above procedure, YOUR Disc #854 will be:
Assigned DiscID 854
and
Assigned BookID 854

Your CURRENT printed Song Lists will, then, work for either looking up by BRAND, which I would never do, because it takes THREE clicks and THREE choices to finally add a Song to the Playlist, or SIMPLY enter the BOOKID, which would correspond to YOUR Song Lists DISCID.

In other words:
DiscID=BookID
So, when a Singer submits a request Slip with what they would be submitting as a DISCID of 85401 or 854-01 (However you have them listed in your Song Lists), which would be DISC 854 and TRACK 01, then, you would SIMPLY TYPE this number, without the DASH (-), in case your are using 854-01 as printed in your Song Lists, and, as submitted by the Singer, into the BOOKID Box, in which, the BOOKID is what makes Hoster soooooo unique.

ONLY HAVING TO ENTER A BOOKID is infinity quicker than adding a SONG via the BRAND!

I hope this helps,

Norm
