I have just tested this on my system Windows XP Pro, with all Windows Updates. It works fine. I can disable my card and it will still work correctly.
The last version that was tied to the Network card was 2.014, their might have been another version after this such as 2.016, but this was released on a limited basis. All of the 2.1xx and up should work fine if your card were to break. There must be something else that is also changing, somewhere. All you would need to do, is reinstall Hoster and it should then work. What version of Windows are you running? Do you have all of the Windows Updates installed on your computer from: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

I have version 2.219, running XP home with sp2. I have auto update on for microsoft. And I just tried it again. Open hoster. Close hoster. Went to internet options, disable my wireless card. Attempted to open hoster. It said "registation or serial number does not match, try installing hoster". I went and enable the wireless card. I was able to open Hoster. So, something is related to the wireless card. Check the records, what did I start with? Again, I have no course of action. But I did get MTU support, so you're trying. And I thank you!
PS. I went to Microsoft and checked for updates. The only one was on Frame 1.1 for sp1. I don't think missing it would create a issue like mine.
