Re: Karaoke???

See that's what I call it, but I am hearing it came Japan, and it is pronounced different there. Actually I think it is more (Ka Roe Key) but with out the syllable pause (KaRoKey) This is why I ask lol

Re: Karaoke???

I have a book here that was my grandfather's from when he was stationed in Japan during the service, and if you go by the pronunciation guide in it it would be: Car-Ah-Oh-Kay

But I'll still stick with the above post ...

Re: Karaoke???

I just came from Japan. Ka Roe Key is the way they pronounce it. When I pronounce it that way here....I get a blank look

I was introduced to Karaoke when I moved to Tokyo in 1988, and lived and worked there for 8 years. Your grandfathers book is correct. With no pauses or accented syllables. ( Kah-Rah-Oh-Kay )

Re: Karaoke???

Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary

One entry found for karaoke.

Main Entry: kar·a·o·ke
Pronunciation: "kar-E-'O-kE, k&-'rO-kE, "kä-rä-'O-(")kA
Function: noun
Etymology: Japanese, from kara empty + Oke, short for Okesutora orchestra
: a device that plays instrumental accompaniments for a selection of songs to which the user sings along and that records the user's singing with the music

I learned that the "correct" pronunciation is the predominant, current pronunciation, and dictionaries are revised to reflect it. When multiple options are presented, as in this case in the dictionary mentioned, then multiple pronunciations are commonly used. (and are "correct")
