Just a thought, as I had a similar problem in the past.
If you have connected your IDE cable to the two drives make sure they are in the right order, one is master and the other is slave, anything else and one or both drives are not recogonized.
This can also happen if the cable is not fitted tightly i.e. not making contact with either of the hard drives properly.
I find it easiest to set my hard drives to cable select which in XP will inform you if anything is wrong on setup.
Losing a drive is usually something simple, unless your drive itself is defective.
