How'd you turn auto-notify off in Win2K? I had to hack the Registry key for the CDROM driver to selectively disable autoplay for my HP 9210e. You can disable autoplay completely but I like autoplay on my other CD drive.

I didn't need to hack any cache or VM settings in Win2K to make any version of Microstudio work. Didn't even need DirectX 8.

ATAPI CD burners without DMA/UDMA capability are CPU hogs and even stupid things like moving the mouse could turn your CDR into a coaster. Try making sure you have DMA or UDMA enabled for your hard drive and burner, or if you can't enable it get hardware that supports it. SCSI is even better if you have a bus mastering SCSI adapter.
