Track Database Search

I have 15,000 song in an external WD 250GB HD. I've done 'build song database' in tools. When I put "*" in search, only 120 soongs show up. When I go to 'tools', 'edit' all 15,000 show up. What am I doing wrong?

HP 6500 laptop, 2GB RAM, 250 GB Hard Drive, Vista Home Premium SP2, Hoster 3.316
