Computer will not start up

Can I reinstall the XP OS without losing info on the hard drive, or does it need to go to the computer Dr.?

i had the same thing happen to me, and re-installed the os, worked for a while, then started happening again and the last time it happened i was getting ready to do a show.. luckily i had a back-up..but anyway i was told the reason why it happened was that my hardrive went bad..i ended up replacing my hardrive ..by doing that i lost all my files..
