The way it is supposed to work is in Tools menu Edit Songs dialog, if you select the vocal to be on the left or right, whichever is correct for that song, then when it goes to play, the non-vocal channel should automatically play so you don't hear the vocals.
Be sure you select the correct Left or Right radio button in Edit Songs, they try to play the song.
