external drive where are you??

Hi there, I've been through so many threads trying to find my answer, but can't.
I bought a 120gb external drive to back up my kma files, but can't get hoster to recognize them on the new drive. It seems to be looking still on the c drive. I tried to direct it to the new drive through configure/build song database, and tell it to go to the external, and still no luck. My C drive is nearly full and I'm afraid of crashing! What am I doing wrong??
